‘Bad Sisters’ co-creator Sharon Horgan on the importance of comedy during the ‘darkest subjects’: ‘That’s real life’

Sharon Horgan thinks her Apple TV+ series, “Bad Sisters,” is a lot like real life.
“We all go through terrible things,” Horgan, one of the show’s co-developers, told Page Six exclusively at the Season 2 premiere on Tuesday night. “But there’s always a moment where we crack up or someone says something terrible and it lightens the mood.”
The Apple TV+ series centers around five sisters living in present-day Dublin, who are all involved in the murder of one of the sister’s abusive, controlling husband. The first season concentrated on the siblings’ plot to murder their brother-in-law and the second season, which was released on Wednesday, examines the aftermath.
The Irish actress and writer, 54, noted that achieving the darkly humorous tone of the show is about “treading the line” and “never laughing at the situation…I mean the whole thing has to just be truthful and believable.”
“I think then you can kind of get away with anything,” she continued.
The “Catastrophe” alum shared that she thought about working on a second season “about midway through filming season one. Like a germ of an idea, we didn’t even know if it would happen or not.”
Horgan wanted to do a second season because “as much as I loved the first season and how it ended, it was a bit of a fairy tale.
“You know, like, woman lives happily ever after, [after] offing her other half.”
The “Shining Vale” star explained that they wanted to show the “reality of what happens when you’ve been in an abusive relationship.
“When you’ve been isolated from your family and how difficult it is to ask for help, when you’ve been in that situation.”
Other cast members, including Eve Hewson, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Daryl McCormack, were also present for the premiere.
Following the initial Nov. 13 drop, additional Season 2 episodes will be released weekly through Dec. 25.
