Bianca Censori helped Kanye West get autism diagnosis after doubting he had bipolar disorder
Bianca Censori encouraged Kanye West to get re-diagnosed after expressing doubts over his bipolar disorder.
During Tuesday’s episode of the “Download” podcast, the rapper — who now goes by Ye — revealed that his wife had him see another doctor who allegedly worked with Justin Bieber and other celebrities.
“My wife took me because she said, ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar, I’ve seen bipolar before,’” West, 47, told host Justin LaBoy, adding that Censori is “educated.”
He continued, “And come to find out, it’s really a case of autism that I have.”
West said that a previous medical professional labeled him with bipolar disorder, so he “put that out” and didn’t question it until Censori encouraged him to get a second opinion.
The Yeezy founder and Censori, who made headlines at the Grammys Sunday when she stepped out in a completely see-through dress, have been married since 2022. Ye was previously married to Kim Kardashian from 2014 to 2022 and the two share four kids.
West said his neurodevelopmental disorder “takes you to a ‘Rain Man’ thing,” referencing the 1988 film about a man who discovers he has a brother with autism.
During the interview, the rapper also recalled wanting to wear a MAGA hat because he likes President Trump “in general.”
“And when people tell you to not do it…and that’s my problem, when fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way,” he said.
West reflected on some of his previous episodes, which included posting a series of bizarre messages on social media.
“A lot of what was sending me into the episodes … the constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control,” he explained.
West confirmed that he hasn’t turned to medication to help him through his episodes since he found out he was incorrectly diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
He also noted that he doesn’t want to take meds that will “block the creativity.”
“That’s what I bring to the world,” he said of his artistry.
The hip-hop star admitted that he has screamed at people in the past while working on music together because he didn’t “understand that that’s what [I] was doing.”
Since receiving a proper medical diagnosis, West says he now knows the signs to look out for when an episode is coming on.
“I watch for it beforehand, but other times it was just like, if you get to the point where it goes, you’re gonna stay in that position for a while. It might go for three days, four days a week,” he said.
West was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016, but nearly six years later — after being canceled for making multiple antisemitic comments — the designer shared he was “mentally misdiagnosed.”
