Butterfly Season 1 Ending Explained: What Happened to Rebecca at the Restaurant?

NEED TO KNOW
- Butterfly centers around former U.S. intelligence operative David trying to save his estranged daughter Rebecca
- The father-daughter duo must repair their estranged relationship, while also fleeing from a dangerous spy organization
- The first season ends on an ambiguous note, with David having to pick up the pieces
Butterfly is a thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
The original Amazon Prime Video series, which premiered Aug. 13, stars Daniel Dae Kim as David Jung, a former highly specialized U.S. intelligence operative who disappeared years prior and started his life over in South Korea. However, his life gets “blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him,” per the show’s description.
In a twist, David soon finds himself being hunted by his estranged daughter, Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), who was purposely trained to kill him by the “sinister spy organization” called Caddis that once employed her father.
As the gripping series plays out, Rebecca must decide whether or not she wants to stay loyal to Caddis or build a relationship with her father after he explains that he faked his own death years prior to protect her.
“It’s really the trigger event to the series itself,” Kim told TIME of the father-daughter reunion. “It’s the event that changes David’s life and also changes Rebecca’s life irrevocably. David at that moment thinks he’s making the right decision for his family, but as is so often the case when you’re a parent, the decision you think is right for your child is often the one that is exactly wrong.”
While David and Rebecca try to figure out how their relationship will work, Caddis adjusts its mission to capture both. It is led by Juno (Piper Perabo), an operative who previously betrayed David, and her son, Oliver (Louis Landau). The showdown plays out in the last moments, but the finale still leaves many questions unanswered.
So, how does season 1 of Butterfly end? Here’s everything to know about the spy-thriller’s ambiguous ending.
Warning: Butterfly season 1 spoilers ahead!
How does Butterfly season 1 end?
Butterfly follows David, a former special operative, who finds out that his estranged daughter, Rebecca, is working for the same dark spy agency, Caddis, that he was forced to flee. David sets out on a mission to rescue Rebecca and save her from Caddis before it’s too late.
However, Rebecca is on a mission of her own to kill David after her boss, Juno, discovers he is alive. As the show plays out, David explains that he and Juno used to work together, but she betrayed him by leaking classified information to a terrorist organization that resulted in most of his team being killed. David subsequently faked his own death to protect both himself and Rebecca, whose data was also leaked to the terrorists.
Before David and Rebecca’s reconnection, she assumed that her dad had abandoned her, so she had no problem with her mission to kill him. After learning the truth, Rebecca decides to give her father a chance, and the two become determined to escape the Caddis operatives sent to capture them.
At one point, David and Rebecca come face-to-face with Juno’s son, Oliver, and convince him that his mother is trying to kill him. Oliver believes them and tells them what Juno is planning. Although they learn valuable information about Caddis, Rebecca is later ambushed and captured by Juno. David boldly risks it all to save Rebecca, and the two successfully escape, while also letting Juno live, in return for her never targeting their family again.
David and Rebecca finally appear to have escaped the clutches of Caddis and are planning to move to the U.S. with David’s wife, Eunju Kim (Kim Tae-hee), and their young daughter, Minhee Jung (Nayoon Kim). Unfortunately, the finale ends on a major cliffhanger when David finds Eunju bleeding on the bathroom floor of a restaurant after she and Rebecca go to the bathroom together.
David tries asking Eunju who slashed her, but she is unable to respond. Meanwhile, Rebecca goes missing, and David cannot help but wonder if Rebecca was the culprit.
What will David do next?
After narrowly avoiding death while rescuing Rebecca from Caddis and Juno, David thinks he is finally in the clear and can live safely with his wife and daughters. However, David also appears to debate whether or not he and Rebecca made the right decision to spare Juno’s life.
Although David is alive at the end of Butterfly season 1, his life gets turned upside down when he discovers Eunju bleeding to death alone in the bathroom and Rebecca vanishing from the premises. David seems more determined than ever to get to the bottom of who attacked his wife and why.
What happened to Rebecca?
Rebecca’s future also seems uncertain in the last moments of the Butterfly season 1 finale.
She initially struggled to fit in with David’s new life with Eunju and Minhee as she confronted feelings of abandonment. Rebecca explained that he appeared to move on and replace her with a new family. However, Eunju openly welcomed Rebecca and remained adamant that they were one family.
Rebecca eventually warms up to the idea, and in the final scene, she follows Eunju to the restaurant’s bathroom after noticing that a waiter acted strangely towards them. It’s not shown what happened in the bathroom, but Rebecca disappears, while Eunju is hurt on the floor.
It’s unclear whether Rebecca was involved in Eunju’s attack or if the attacker abducted her.
Who attacked Eunju?
Just when David’s family seems to be at peace and able to move on, he finds Eunju bleeding out on a bathroom floor. The finale ends with David noticing that Rebecca has also disappeared, while Eunju cannot tell him who stabbed her.
The show doesn’t answer who attacked Eunju or if it was a fatal wound, but before it happened, Rebecca noticed a waiter was acting off. The finale teases that David’s next mission is to solve who was behind Eunju’s attack and determine if he needs to rescue Rebecca or hold her responsible.
“I don’t think David trusts Rebecca now,” Kim told TV Insider of the finale. “I think that’s the journey of the first season between the two of them. It’s whether they can trust each other after everything that’s happened in the past, and I think David is trying to win Rebecca’s trust, but I don’t think he’s 100% trusting her as well.”
What has the cast said about the ambiguous ending?
After the first season concluded on a major cliffhanger, questions arose about why the show needed one last mysterious note.
“We wanted to end on an event that called into question all of the bonds that had been built over season one,” Kim, who also worked as an executive producer, explained to TIME.
He continued, “David is trying to bring his family back together, and we want to see him succeed in that attempt. And the end of Season 1 shows us that it’s not as easy as he thinks it’s going to be.”
Will there be a Butterfly season 2?
Butterfly has not been officially renewed for a second season. However, several cast members have expressed interest and hope in doing another season.
“I have lots of hopes for it. I hope there is a second season, first of all,” Kim told TV Insider. “But what I like about the show is that we’re already establishing that it’s an international show. So it makes the world our oyster. We could go anywhere.
He continued, “Given the nature of what David and Rebecca do, you could see them traveling. You could see them settling somewhere else. That’s kind of the goal at the start of Season 1. So we’ll see.”
Meanwhile, Kim Tae-hee, who plays Eunju, also admitted that she’s unsure if her character will return and told the outlet, “I hope I could have some more action scenes.”
If the show does get renewed for a second season, Kim teased that Eunju’s attack and Rebecca’s disappearance will take center stage. “The ramifications of that event lead to some serious soul searching and in some cases, changes of personality,” he shared.
