Crazed ‘Today’ intruder looking for Al Roker arrested after coming face-to-face with Craig Melvin

An intruder looking for Al Roker was arrested after breaking into the “Today” show studio and confronting Craig Melvin on Thursday morning.

Page Six can confirm that the man slipped past security at the NBC show’s New York City headquarters and asked Melvin for Al Roker after being unable to find him.

The intruder — who, we are told, was wearing a backpack — got as far as the staircase inside the studio when he approached Melvin. Our sources confirmed that the maniac did not enter the actual filming studio.

After Melvin called security, the man was detained and arrested.

The New York Police Department also confirmed to Page Six that they have someone in custody.

“On Thursday, July 16, 2026, at approximately 0919 hours, it was reported to officers that there was a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct,” a statement read.

“Officers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody. There were no injuries reported. The investigation remains ongoing.”

Speaking about the terrifying moment, a source also told us, “They were already on edge because of Savannah, and this is chilling,” referencing the kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie.

“He could have stabbed Craig. He could have planted a bomb. It’s f–king insane.”

The source went on to note that 30 Rockefeller Center is a “difficult place for security because it’s really a public place.

“There’s a coffee shop inside the area that staff use to get in and out. People come in with entourages — all the celebrities have like 12 people with them, so it’s not unusual for a whole group of people to be going through security at once.”

Our insider noted that they “don’t think it’s like they don’t care,” adding, “It’s just a complicated place to do security. I imagine there will be meetings today though.”

Following the incident, Melvin, 47, and Roker, 71, went on the air afterwards and didn’t hint at the situation.

TMZ — who was the first to break the news — reported that the intruder lunged at Melvin and screamed a racial slur at him during the encounter.

The outlet also obtained a photo from inside the studio that showed Melvin surrounded by people following the incident.

Page Six has reached out to “Today” and Melvin’s reps for comments.

Melvin — who has been on the “Today” show since 2018 — became Savannah’s co-anchor after Hoda Kotb left the show in 2025.

“You were made for this job,” Kotb told Melvin when the news was announced in November 2024.

“You have all the things that this job needs,” Kotb added. “You’re the right person for it.”

During Thursday’s broadcast, Savannah also announced she’s taking a break from the “Today” show for the next couple of weeks to shoot a Wordle game show that Jimmy Fallon is producing.

The 54-year-old took a hiatus from the morning news program earlier this year after her mom’s kidnapping.

Nancy, 84, was last seen at her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31. Authorities are continuing to investigate her apparent kidnapping.

The “Today” family, including Melvin, has supported Savannah throughout the crisis.
