Everything to Know About ‘Spaceballs 2’: Mel Brooks Will Return in Long-Awaited Sequel
A new Spaceballs movie is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. Mel Brooks announced he is returning to the sequel of the 1987 parody film with a cast full of all-star actors who are eager to bring the colorful characters back to life.
Brooks directed, cowrote and produced the first Spaceballs film, which also starred John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner and Joan Rivers.
News of the sequel was first announced in June 2024, with Brooks signing on as a producer. One year later, it was revealed that the acting icon would be reprising his role of Yogurt, a parody of the Star Wars character Yoda.
Pullman and Moranis will also be back for the sequel — with a few new faces joining them for the wild ride.
Us Weekly shares everything to know about Spaceballs 2 below:
Josh Gad Will Produce and Star in ‘Spaceballs 2’
Josh Gad is set to star in Spaceballs 2 alongside Brooks. Months after it was announced that the project was in development, Gad teased that he had finished the script.
“Without MGM taking me into their Culver prison cells, I can tell you that the draft is done,” he told Forbes in November 2024. “Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.”
Gad described the opportunity as a “fever dream” and said Brooks was “so unbelievably supportive, involved and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away.”
“It’s a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen,” Gad continued. “I can’t say more than that. I can’t tell you anything beyond [the] process at this point, but I can tell you every hour of every day right now is spent making this project closer and closer to reality — and I think we’re nearing the end zone here.”
Who Else Is in the ‘Spaceballs 2’ Cast?
In addition to Gad and Brooks, Keke Palmer joined the cast, but details about her role as Destiny are largely being kept under wraps. Pullman and Moranis will be reprising their roles of Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively.
Bill’s youngest son, Lewis Pullman, also joined the cast, per The Hollywood Reporter. He will be portraying a character named Starburst, the son of Queen Vespa and Lone Starr.
A photo from the first table read in September 2025 showed Moranis, Brooks, Palmer, Pullman, Zuniga, Wyner and Anthony Carrigan as part of the cast. Gad and director Josh Greenbaum were also in the image.
The black and white shot showed the group chatting amongst themselves as they sat around a table that held a laptop with someone on a video call. Fans of the film immediately clocked that the image was a recreation of the table read for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, keeping in line with Space Balls’ parody of the iconic franchise.
A Teaser Trailer for ‘Spaceballs 2’ Was Released
Brooks shared a teaser for Spaceballs 2 on X, which featured a Star Wars-style black background with blue lettering, on June 12, 2025. The text featured on the screen described how many Star Wars films and television shows have been produced in the past few decades, along with multiple Jurassic Park movies, Marvel movies and shows and the expansion of other major franchises.
At the end of the trailer, Brooks appeared in a Spaceballs sweatshirt, saying, “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.”
A clip of the character Dark Helmet flashed on the screen with the words, “May the Schwartz be with you.”
When Will ‘Spaceballs 2’ Hit Theaters?
An official premiere date has not been announced, but the film’s first teaser trailer released in June 2025 confirmed it’s coming in 2027. “The Schwartz awakens in 2027” the video teased.
What Has Bill Pullman Said About ‘Spaceballs 2’?
Bill exclusively told Us Weekly in December 2025 that he watched son Lewis “with great joy” while shooting Spaceballs 2 together.
“We just got done [with] three months in Australia, shooting a movie, Spaceballs, the sequel and he plays my son in it,” Bill teased while supporting Lewis at the premiere of his movie The Testament of Ann Lee.
Bill noted, “I did Spaceballs [as] my second movie. I was 32. [Lewis] is 32 now. So it’s like watching myself.”
