Frankie Muniz just had a nostalgic family reunion.
The Malcolm in the Middle alum, 39, shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the forthcoming series revival on Thursday, Oct. 23, when he posted a reunion snap with two of his on-screen brothers: Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson.
In the photo, Muniz — who played Malcolm in the seven-season series from 2000 to 2006 — smiled alongside Berfield, 39, and Masterson, 45, backstage amid filming.
“I was told not to post this yet, but then I listened to this song,” Muniz captioned the image, which he soundtracked on Instagram with the Malcolm theme, “Boss of Me” by They Might Be Giants.
“I’m just too excited for y’all to see the new episodes and I miss my brothers,” he added of Berfield and Masterson, who played Reese and Francis, respectively.
Muniz, who also shared the image on X, was announced in December 2024 to be part of the returning cast for a revival on Disney+.
The four-episode miniseries titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair will also feature performances from Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, who played the siblings’ parents, Hal and Lois. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest brother Dewey, is not returning for the series and his character will be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark instead.
In September, Muniz teased on the Lightweights Podcast with Joe Vulpis that the revival will be unlike anything viewers expect — adding that it’s “hard to fit in 20 years of stuff in four 30-minute episodes.”
“It’s pretty shocking, to be honest,” he said. “But I think people are going to be very happy with what they came up with.”

The project, Muniz explained, was initially envisioned as a two-hour reunion film before those behind the series realized there was too much ground to cover. Muniz insists there’s now “closure” for his character. It follows a grown-up Malcolm as he returns home with his girlfriend Tristan (Kiana Madeira) and daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten) to celebrate his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. It’s set to debut on Disney+ in 2026.
“I had the best time of my entire life, I’m not exaggerating, filming this reboot,” Muniz said. “Like, I loved it so much, way more than I ever thought I could have.”
Cranston, 69, revealed during a June episode of Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade that it was “amazing” to see his TV sons now “around the same age I was when we first started.” He recalled that Per Sullivan thought the revival sounded “fantastic,” but he ultimately didn’t wish to return as Dewey. “He’s actually going to Harvard,” Cranston explained. “He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now. He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was 9 or something. So I’m not into it.’ ”
The forthcoming project has been something Cranston has been “pushing for for the last 10 years,” with series creator Linwood Boomer helping get it off the ground after plenty of conversation.
“I just started wearing him down until he said, ‘I’ve got an idea.’ I said, ‘good,’ ” he joked.
