‘Harry Potter’ TV show recasts Ginny Weasley role for Season 2

HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV show is recasting the role of Ginny Weasley after one season “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Child actor Gracie Cochrane confirmed Monday she will not be returning as Ron Weasley’s younger sister for Season 2 of the fantasy series.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series after season one,” Cochrane and her family said in a statement to Page Six.

“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to [casting director] Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience,” the statement continued.

The family also said Cochrane “is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”

HBO told Page Six they “support” Cochrane’s decision to leave the show .

“We are grateful for her work on season one,” the network said in a statement to us. “We wish Gracie and her family the best.”

Each season of the “Harry Potter” show is adapting J.K Rowling’s seven books. Season 1, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” wrapped filming and comes out on Christmas, while Season 2, titled “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” is scheduled to begin filming in the fall.

Ginny has a bigger role in the second book, in which she’s tricked into opening a secret room in Hogwarts castle and releasing a murderous giant serpent.

Cochrane’s role as Ginny was announced in August 2025.

HBO also revealed at the time that twins Tristan and Gabriel Harland were cast as Fred and George Weasley and Ruari Spooner was cast as Percy Weasley.

Ron, meanwhile, is being played by Alastair Stout.

The cast also includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” premieres Dec. 25 on HBO.
