Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Still Pending as Investigation Continues, Coroner Says

Hayden Panettiere‘s official cause of death is still pending despite new details that have emerged amid the ongoing investigation.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office addressed the latest reports in a statement to FOX Carolina on Monday, September 14, noting, “We have not released anything at this time. We will send out an email release when ready.”

The update came shortly after ABC News reported that the investigation into Panettiere’s death is now cross-country in both Los Angeles and South Carolina. Investigators are reportedly focusing on what drugs could have been involved and where they came from.

According to a separate report from TMZ, law enforcement sources believe the actress took one oxycodone pill that was laced with fentanyl. Sources connected to the case claim Panettiere had a dealer in L.A. before her death who was allegedly providing her with black-market prescription drugs. The DEA is reportedly attempting to trace the pill back to the alleged dealer.

A rep for Panettiere told Us: “The investigation is still ongoing. Law enforcement has not disclosed who they are targeting, but I am told the case is complex. We hope to have more answers soon.”

Panettiere died on August 16 after traveling to South Carolina with on-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson. She was 36.

Local authorities later confirmed that they received reports of an “unresponsive female” at a residence, who was eventually identified as the Heroes actress. First responders reportedly attempted “advanced cardiac life support,” including CPR and other tactics, but they were unable to resuscitate her.

Dispatch audio obtained by People referenced an “overdose” and “cardiac arrest” around the time of Panettiere’s death.

As details continue to emerge about the circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death, her rep shut down rampant speculation in a statement shared exclusively with Us last month.

“Many people who were not close to Hayden are using her death as an opportunity to fuel gossip and speculation about a situation they knew very little about,” the statement began. “It is deeply disrespectful to her memory and to those who knew and loved her and are actively grieving this tremendous loss.”

The rep urged people to come forward if they have any “legitimate information” about the case.

“There is much more to this story than what is currently being discussed publicly, and those closest to Hayden are actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation to help ensure that the truth comes to light and that justice is properly served,” the statement concluded.
