HBO Crossovers! See Every Actor Who Has Appeared in The Gilded Age and the Sex and the City Universe

NEED TO KNOW
- See every actor who has appeared on The Gilded Age and in the Sex and the City universe
- Of course there’s Cynthia Nixon, who plays Ada on The Gilded Age and Miranda Hobbes across all Sex and the City iterations
- There are many more familiar faces who have worked on both HBO properties
At HBO, everyone’s family.
In fact, eagle-eyed viewers of some of the network’s most prestigious programs may notice some overlap in casting. There have been quite a few actors who have worked on both The Gilded Age and in the Sex and the City universe — including its revival series, And Just Like That…, and its two feature films.
Some are more obvious, like Cynthia Nixon, who plays Ada Forte (née Brooks) on The Gilded Age and Miranda Hobbes on Sex and the City and And Just Like That…, but there are plenty of other familiar faces that have portrayed characters in both worlds.
Take a look at everyone who has appeared on The Gilded Age and in the Sex and the City universe.
Cynthia Nixon
As we mentioned above, Nixon is famous for playing Miranda — one of the four main women of Sex and the City (the others, of course, being Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones and Kristin Davis’ Charlotte York).
Nixon appeared in all six seasons of Sex and the City between 1998 and 2004, returning for 2008’s Sex and the City film and its sequel, 2010’s Sex and the City 2. In 2021, she starred in the revival series, And Just Like That…, which concludes with its third season on Thursday, Aug. 14.
On The Gilded Age, Nixon plays Ada, the spinster sister of Agnes (Christine Baranski), in all three seasons.
Kelli O’Hara
Kelli O’Hara plays Aurora Fane on The Gilded Age, Agnes’ niece by marriage who helps Marian Brook (also a relation of Agnes’) break into society.
You may also spot her as Ellen in Sex and the City 2. Ellen was a guest at the wedding of Stanford Blanch (the late Willie Garson) and Anthony Marantino (Mario Cantone) and had a scene with Carrie in which the women disagreed about the call of motherhood.
“Liza [Minnelli] was there the day I was filming,” O’Hara gushed to Broadway.com in 2010 about her “small but pivotal” role in the film.
Ashlie Atkinson
Ashlie Atkinson plays Mamie Fish, the wittiest member of late 19th-century high society on The Gilded Age, and also a real-life person from American history.
Over on And Just Like That…, Atkinson plays Amanda, Carrie’s book editor.
Nathan Lane
Nathan Lane portrays Ward McAllister on The Gilded Age, playing a character akin to that of Truman Capote — a member of the elite social class whose downfall comes when he exposes its secrets in a juicy tell-all book.
Lane also played Bobby Fine on Sex and the City, a flamboyant and presumably gay cabaret singer who marries Bitsy von Muffling (Julie Halston) in the season 5 episode “I Love a Charade.” He doesn’t appear on And Just Like That…, as Bitsy reveals in the season 1 episode of the revival series, titled “Little Black Book,” that Bobby died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Katie Finneran
Katie Finneran played Ellen in the season 1 episode of Sex and the City titled “Models and Mortals.” Ellen is a guest at a dinner party Miranda attends with a date. Away from the dinner table, Ellen explains to Miranda that her date has “a thing for models.”
Finneran plays Anne Morris on season 1 of The Gilded Age, the wife of city alderman Patrick Morris (Michael Gill).
LisaGay Hamilton
LisaGay Hamilton plays Frances Watkins Harper, a real-life abolitionist, suffragist, activist and writer from American history, on The Gilded Age, season 3.
Hamilton played Kendall on the season 5 episode of Sex and the City titled “Critical Condition.” Kendall is Miranda’s neighbor who knocks on her door at 2:30 a.m. when Miranda’s son Brady wouldn’t stop crying.
Marceline Hugot
Marceline Hugot plays Mrs. Foster in season 3 of The Gilded Age, a member of the New York Heritage Society, who tries to contact Agnes.
In season 3 of Sex and the City, she played Mary, the MC at the Fire Department of New York’s annual calendar competition, in the episode titled “Where There’s Smoke…” Carrie judges the contest alongside politician Bill Kelley (John Slattery).
