Jenny Slate Thought She and Michelle Williams Ruined This NSFW Scene in Dying for Sex Because They Were ‘Laughing So Hard’ (Exclusive)

Michelle Williams knows how to make her costar laugh!
Jenny Slate, who stars in FX’s Dying For Sex opposite Williams, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview at the New York City premiere that she “laughed so hard” while filming a scene that includes a rather NSFW line.
“We had a lot of fun on set,” Slate, 43, says when asked about working with Williams. She adds that they also had “caring moments” of making sure they were both “okay” while filming the more intense subject matters.
“The day when she says the line that she is a ‘wee bit dry in her vagina,’ we just laughed so hard,” the actress continues. “Michelle’s voice that she was doing, it’s just one of those moments where you can’t stop giggling and you might ruin the take.”
Slate, in fact, was actually surprised to find out that the scene was included in the final cut. “I was saying that I felt like maybe we didn’t get the take because we were laughing so hard, but it is in fact in the show,” she says.
The new comedy drama is inspired by the late Molly Kochan’s real story of leaving her husband and embarking on a journey to explore her sexual desires after being diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. The series is based on a Wondery podcast that Kochan created with her close friend, Nikki Boyer, before her 2019 death.
The cast features Williams as Molly and Slate as Nikki. Additionally, Jay Duplass, Rob Delaney, Kelvin Yu, David Rasche, Esco Jouléy and Sissy Spacek star. Boyer, meanwhile, serves as an executive producer, alongside co-creators Kim Rosenstock and Elizabeth Meriwether.
Williams, 44, tells PEOPLE on the red carpet that building chemistry with Slate was effortless. “It was super easy,” the Emmy winner says. “It was really not a construction project. It was just like a sort of falling into each other kind of thing.”
Boyer also had nothing but positive things to say about working with Slate. As for why the comedic actress was the perfect actress to play her on the small screen, she explains, “She’s who I want to be when I grow up. I love Jenny Slate. We’ve become very dear friends.”

The executive producer continues, “She’s so funny and she brings so much heart and humor and grit. I love the arc that she goes on as a character, which is somewhat similar to mine. I could see little pieces of me and the beauty that she just brought as herself to the role of Nikki.”
Boyer adds that Slate is “such a good actress” and “went really, really deep” for her role. “I was just so grateful that she put so much heart and soul into playing me,” she says.
Dying for Sex is now streaming on Hulu.
