John Krasinski Suggested Jim’s Documentary Surprise for Pam on The Office — Thanks to a Tip from Wife Emily Blunt

Fans have Emily Blunt to thank for one of the sweetest moments between Jim Halpert and Pam Beesley on The Office.

Jenna Fischer revealed that John Krasinski’s wife was the person behind the idea that resulted in Jim surprising Pam with footage from the documentary team of their relationship in one of the last episodes of the sitcom’s final season.

On the May 15 episode of the Office Ladies podcast, Fischer reminded Krasinski, 44, that he was the one to pitch the idea that would “bring [Jim and Pam] back together” as the show closed out, after a string of episodes where distance had “driven a wedge between” them.

“I remember saying, ‘Greg [Daniels], we have to reveal what is in the teapot note before we end this show. People need to know this, but how do you do that?’ We couldn’t figure it out,” Fischer, 50, recalled.

“And I remember, clear as day, John, we were in the break room for some reason, and it was a Monday and you came in and you were doing your little shoulder shake that you do when you get real excited about an idea,” she continued, as Krasinski affirmed that his excited shoulder shake “still hasn’t changed,” even today.

“You were like, ‘You guys, you guys, you guys! I was talking to Emily [Blunt] this weekend. Listen. Listen. Okay. What is the one thing that this couple has that you wish you could have as a couple? They have their whole love story on tape!'” Fisher recalled. “This documentary crew has been documenting this love story. I remember you saying, ‘Jenna, could you imagine if you could go back to that first date with Lee [Kirk] and someone had taped it and you could watch yourselves on that first date. Wouldn’t you just, like, lose it?’ And I was like, ‘Oh my god, I would lose it.'”

“And you’re like, ‘What if Jim asked the documentary crew to put together the footage and he shows it to Pam?’ And I was like, ‘Oh my god, I would be a puddle.’ And then we just all got so excited about this idea,” she said, revealing the backstory for what ended up being one of the sweetest moments the couple shared in one of the last episodes of season 9.

Following Fischer’s recollection of how the adorable plot point came to be, Krasinski said, “That sounds like a Blunt idea. That sounds like Blunt genius right there. And I just stole it.”

Angela Kinsey, Fischer’s co-host on the podcast who played Angela Martin on The Office, jumped in to say that Blunt’s idea was “so smart,” to which Krasinski agreed.

“It was so smart. By the way – I remember when they were putting that together, I was so excited to see it too, ’cause we didn’t know what they were gonna put together,” he said, referring to the tape that was compiled of all the moments leading up to Jim and Pam’s romance, and all the moments that followed. “Oh God. It was so much. It was so much.”

The Office fans’ love for Jim and Pam runs deep, as both Krasinski and Fischer know — and Blunt knows it too. In December, she revealed that she still hears comments from fans about Pam when she’s out with her husband of 13 years.

“Do you know how many people still yell out, ‘I wish you were with Pam!’ like when I’m walking next to him?” Blunt, 41, said on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “‘Where’s Pam?’ I’m like, ‘She’s not here!'”

The actress went on to rave about Fischer, though. “She’s the best. She’s one of our dearest friends. We love Jenna.”

Fischer has admittedly run into similar problems, as she said in 2020 that fans sometimes have a hard time accepting that she and Krasinski are not together in real life.

“People don’t know how John and I are not a couple in real life. They don’t understand it,” she told Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin Malone, on his podcast, An Oral History of The Office. “I don’t know how to explain it, because it’s a little bit like telling kids there’s no Santa.”
