Josh Radnor says ‘HIMYM’ cast is no longer close
Josh Radnor revealed the “How I Met Your Mother” cast is “not even a little bit” close anymore.
“I don’t mean that in any dramatic way,” the actor said on Sunday’s episode of the “Half the Picture” podcast, before divulging where he stands with each of his former co-stars.
Radnor explained that in March, he had Neil Patrick Harris on his “HIMYM” rewatch podcast and they had “an interesting conversation about the some of the tension” they had on the set of the hit sitcom.
Radnor said he and Jason Segel “send each other texts every once in a while,” but noted he hasn’t seen the “Shrinking” star “in a really long time.”
The 52-year-old added that he saw Cobie Smulders twice on Zoom, for her two appearances on the rewatch podcast, and hasn’t seen Alyson Hannigan since his wedding to Jordana Jacobs in January 2024.
However, Radnor noted that he has “love” for all of his former co-stars.
“It’s like college where you have this very intense time together and you think you’re going to be… you can’t imagine not seeing each other every day,” he explained.
“And then it just disperses and you just go out and live your life.”
Radnor, who played Ted Mosby on the Emmy Award-winning show, explained that fans have always had “a yearning” for the cast to have a tight bond in real life.
“People really want to believe that, like, me and Neil and Jason are hitting bars in New York City together. People really want to believe that,” Radnor said.
He added, “It’s a little more like family than friends in that you don’t get to choose your family. We were cast. We didn’t choose each other. And family dynamics come out to play when you’re in an environment like that for so long.”
Radnor reiterated there’s a “deep and rich and probably everlasting” love among the cast, but “it’s not an active love.”
“HIMYM,” which ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014 on CBS, follows single Ted Mosby and his group of friends in New York City.
Earlier this year, Radnor and Harris, 53, hashed out some of their on-set problems on the “How We Made Your Mother” podcast, with Harris admitting he felt his performance as ladies man Barney Stinson “annoyed” Radnor.
“I remember often when we were filming, and I sensed frustration from you because you wanted the scene to be like a good scene and I was looking at you like, ‘Motherf—er, I’m doing spit takes,’” Harris told his former co-star.
Radnor confirmed he felt the tension between the two actors at the time, but noted the drama “might have been a little bit of confusion between actor and character.”
Additionally, Radnor admitted he felt insecure when they were shooting the show because the rest of the cast, including Harris, was more famous than him at the time.
“I think that I was just trying to manage a lot of different things and emotions, and they came out sideways sometimes,” he said.
