Kate Winslet recalls wearing ‘transparent’ outfit to meet King Charles III: ‘Oh, my God’
Kate Winslet appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday night to discuss her directorial debut, but ended up divulging the questionable look she wore to meet King Charles III decades ago.
Harking back to the 1996 premiere of “Sense and Sensibility,” Winslet shared, “The first time I met him. Oh my goodness. He had come to support the royal premiere of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ when I was only 20.”
For the occasion, she wore a totally sheer black lace jumpsuit with flat black sandals and a black coat.
“I sort of hadn’t realized we were really going to meet him. So I forgot about the fact that I really was wearing a kind of transparent lace outfit,” she laughed, adding, “And thank God I’d worn a coat because as he’s making his way towards me, I’m like, ‘Nipples! Nipples! Nipples! Oh, my God.’ And then someone just went, ‘Coat!’ and [I covered myself] and went, ‘Your Majesty.’”
The actress had many more opportunities to choose outfits better-suited to meet the Royals; this summer, she became one of the Ambassadors for The King’s Foundation, which “supports small charities and crafts that have been outdated.”
For last night’s show, Winslet chose a more tailored black and white pinstriped suit with stiletto heels, though she nearly had a wardrobe malfunction — she confessed that she tripped walking out of her dressing room, on her way to the stage.
Die-hard Winslet fans might make a connection to one of the most iconic “Titanic” looks, when Rose DeWitt Bukater wears a white pinstriped coat when we are first introduced to the character, though in the inverse colorway,
Winslet is on a press tour for the movie “Goodbye June,” which was written by her son, Joe Anders.
Now nearly 22, Anders wrote the film when he was 19, pulling from his own family dynamics when his family came together upon the death of his grandmother, Winslet’s mother.
Winslet is the film’s director, a producer and also has an acting role in the movie. It is the first feature film directed by the 56-year-old, making it a milestone moment for both Winslet and her son.
