Love Island USA couple Kenny Rodriguez and JaNa Craig’s breakup shocked fans last month, and new details are coming to light about the state of their relationship in the months leading up to it.
Kenny and JaNa, along with many of their fellow season 6 alums, got back in front of the camera for Love Island: Beyond the Villa, Peacock’s spinoff series with the beloved cast.
In the Thursday, Aug. 7 episode of the show, Kenny, 25, and JaNa, 28, celebrated their nine-month anniversary with a special date night, but things didn’t exactly go as planned.
Vibes seemed slightly off between the pair as the date got started.
Things got off to a rocky start as JaNa quipped that they’d technically been together for 10 months, but Kenny had a “side piece for a whole three days,” referring to his betrayal during Casa Amor, when he recoupled with another woman, while she stayed single and remained loyal to him.
They began comparing their time in the villa, as Kenny said JaNa had “two side pieces,” and then JaNa asked if Kenny had “shared a bed” with another woman in Casa Amor, which didn’t seem to be something he was interested in talking about.
Things switched up again, though, as JaNa complimented Kenny on how he’s learned to “communicate” with her, which he appreciated and said, “You’re a mature woman.”
“Yeah, I pride myself on being mature,” JaNa then said. “But I think you’re teaching me patience.”
Once the topic of moving in together came up, the romantic energy was officially gone.
Revealing new details about the initial conversation they had about living together, JaNa recalled how she “started bawling crying, and then I hung up” after Kenny “full-on said no” to moving in with her.
“Obviously, I jumped the gun, like I should’ve just listened to what you had to say, but I was so frustrated, I think I was really embarrassed,” she admitted. “And now, I guess I do like the separation [and] space. Like, after we spend the whole night together, I come back to my room and you have yours. It’s fine.”
When Kenny revealed that he had a conversation about their living arrangement with Miguel Harichi, who “didn’t know that we were living separately,” things got testy.
“What’d you tell him?” JaNa asked, and Kenny said, “I just mentioned the fact that we like our space.”
“That’s not true,” JaNa said. “I want to be smothered in your space.”
Kenny didn’t mince his words as he reiterated, “I want my space.”
JaNa’s concern seemed to be that Kenny was telling their friends that they “both wanted space,” which is “not the case,” and he said, “I voiced to him [that] I want separation from you.”
After noticing JaNa was visibly upset, he clarified, “Like I wanted to live separately. Sorry, that was unclear.”
She claimed it didn’t “bother” her and they’d “have more problems if we lived together,” but as they left the date, they both confided in producers about how they felt.
“Oh f—,” Kenny said as JaNa got in the car.
When a producer asked JaNa what happened, she said, “Whenever he gets upset, he gets very, very quiet first.”
He then checked in with JaNa inside the car, who told him, “You full-on said, ‘Let’s live separate because I need space and it’s too soon.’ Okay, cool, I respect it. But then you go tell our friends?”
“Bro,” as all Kenny said in response. “I’m ready to just dip.”
A source confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had split on July 27.
Speculation had been rampant that the former couple got into a fight at David Dobrik’s birthday party on Saturday, July 26, which they attended together, but the source insisted “there was no big, public blowout.”
“They will not be getting back together,” the source added.
In a statement on her Instagram Stories on July 29, JaNa weighed in on the theories about their split, as she said, “None have matched up to how terrible, disgusting and disappointing it truly is.”
“Discovering that someone you loved isn’t who you thought they were and that the relationship you thought you were building hasn’t been genuine since day one has been truly devastating,” she wrote.
