Meghan Markle tried — and failed — to dye her own hair at home

Even Meghan Markle has experienced a self-inflicted hair fail.

On the most recent episode of her podcast, “Confessions of a Female Founder,” the Duchess of Sussex sat down with her hair colorist and the founder of Highbrow Hippie, Kadi Lee — and explained the scary scenario that led them to meeting.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Markle, 43, decided her hair could use a quick refresh and reached for some box dye to do the trick.

“I thought, ‘I’m going to look just like she does on the box,’” she explained in the April 22 episode. Unfortunately, the finished look was far from what Markle had expected.

“It was this very inky, almost Elvira-esque black hair,” the actress said, referring to the Mistress of the Dark’s blue-black hue.

Markle immediately reached out to her wedding-day hairstylist Serge Normant, “and he said, ‘You need to see Kadi,’” she recalled. “And you came over. I mean, we were masked and all the things. It was such an interesting time, but I remember that day so well.”

Markle not only put down the box dye for good and turned to Lee as her go-to colorist, but the pair also became great friends. Her and Prince Harry’s kids Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet even call her “Auntie Kadi” and the As Ever founder is an investor in Highbrow Hippie.

“Our kids love Auntie Kadi,” Markle said. “It’s my favorite when they run out to your car. It’s like, ‘Kadi!’”

Markle’s hair journey hasn’t always been easy — especially during her college sorority years.

“When I was at Northwestern and I moved into Kappa [Kappa Gamma], our sorority there, I don’t even think they made plug-in flat irons at the time,” she said in the episode. “If they did, I didn’t know where they were because I had the little stove with the flat iron that would go in and have a paper towel on the side.”

She continued, “And I remember most of the girls in the sorority — who were not black — saying, ‘What’s that smell? Is hair burning?’”

“And it was just what you would do to figure out how to grapple with this texture of hair,” she explained.

Perhaps Markle can revive her stark hair color for Halloween this year.
