Meghan McCain Addresses ‘Political Differences’ With Her Family: We ‘Love and Support Each Other’
Meghan McCain asserts that there’s no bad blood with her relatives even if they sit across the political aisle from one another.
“Going to address something because there’s quite a bit of negative online chatter directed at me over this,” Meghan, 41, wrote via X on Thursday, July 16. “My mother, siblings and I love and support each other despite our political differences and affiliations.”
She continued, “I am still a very conservative Republican, it is OK that they are not.”
Meghan is one of late Republican senator John McCain’s four children with Cindy McCain. John, who died in 2018 at age 81, and Cindy, 72, also shared sons John, 40, James, 38, and daughter Bridget, 34. (John was also the father of three children from his previous marriage to Carol Shepp.)
Cindy is also a lifelong Republican, though she crossed the party line in 2020 to endorse Joe Biden over Donald Trump. Cindy and James are also set to host a fundraiser for Arizona’s democratic governor, Katie Hobbs, this fall in support of her reelection campaign, according to MS Now. (The outlet also reported that Jimmy registered as a Democrat in 2024, endorsing Kamala Harris that same year in her now-failed challenge to Trump’s campaign.)
“If there is one big thing I’ve taken from Lindsey [Graham’s] passing last week, it’s that life is short,” Meghan acknowledged on Thursday, referring to the South Carolina politician’s death at 71. “It is not worth losing relationships or family over politics. I know a lot of you want drama and ugliness, but it simply isn’t there.”
Graham, who died earlier this month following a sudden illness, had been longtime friends and Senate colleagues with John.
“The first time I met Lindsey Graham, I was 11 years old in a hotel lobby and he had just attended a political event with my dad,” Meghan recalled in an X tribute shared Sunday, July 16. “He sat down next to me and told me that he loved my dad. I remember liking his deep Southern accent and smile and immediately felt comfortable around him. He somehow seemed younger, hipper and more interesting than most of the political figures that rotated around my dad’s orbit.”
Meghan gushed that Graham and John were “fast friends and political comrades,” adding that he even became “a constant source of support” for Cindy after her husband died.
“The news of his sudden passing is shocking and deeply saddening for me and my family,” Meghan stated. “Like many relationships in life, mine with Lindsey was complex in later years. I choose to remember the endless laughter and joy he brought to my family so many times, in so many ways. These memories are some of the most precious of my life.”
