Monica Barbaro had a mini Marilyn Monroe moment!
On Friday, Aug. 29, the Oscar-nominated actress, 35, suffered a brief wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet at the Venice International Film Festival for the premiere of boyfriend Andrew Garfield’s film After the Hunt.
As Barbaro arrived at the outdoor step-and-repeat, wind blew her hair slightly, but the star was unbothered until a particularly large gust struck.
The gust blew upward — Marilyn Monroe-style, no subway grate required — and though Barbaro wasn’t expecting it like the Hollywood starlet, she handled it gracefully. The top overlay of her black, Christian Dior gown blew upward, and billowed, appearing inflated and bulbous for about a second, footage of the moment shared by Cinema Blend shows.
The A Complete Unknown actress appeared slightly startled, but was able to push the outer layer down, returning it to shape swiftly and with apparent ease. With a small chuckle, she then pushed her hair out of her face and turned to face different photographers, seemingly unfazed by the near-malfunction.
Even without her quick reaction time, Barbaro wouldn’t have been exposed in any way because she wore a black slip underneath the pleated outer layer of her Dior gown.
The actress opted for a simple glam and minimal accessories at the Venice festival — just a pair of sparkling earrings and a single ring — letting her Dior dress do all of the talking. The black, floor-length dress featured a high-neck and drop waist, a thick ribbon tied into a bow separating its pleated top from its skirt featuring slightly larger pleats. The gown also featured another bow detail, a large ribbon draped across the star’s back.
Barbaro, who was at the event to support her boyfriend, posed solo throughout the red carpet, letting Garfield, 42, shine separately as the star of the movie.
The same day she handled her mishap, Barbaro was spotted arriving in Venice with Garfield. The pair were photographed holding hands as they arrived in the city for the world premiere of the film, the latest from Challengers and Queer director Luca Guadagnino.
The actress does not star in the film, though she and Garfield are working together with Guadagnino (whom Barbaro has called “one of my favorite directors”) on the Italian filmmaker’s next movie, Artificial.

Barbaro and Garfield have been romantically linked since February. At the time, a source told PEOPLE that the couple was “spending time together quietly” after fans spotted them at a play in London.
While neither has publicly confirmed their relationship (Garfield previously told Esquire that he “won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever”) the pair have been photographed together attending events throughout the year, including a recent PDA-filled appearance at Wimbledon in July.
Barbaro’s solo appearance in Venice, meanwhile, is just the latest stylish appearance the star has made since shooting to fame with her Oscar-nominated turn as Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown — with perhaps the most memorable being her Met Gala debut look earlier this year.
For the star-studded event, the actress wore a recreation of a 1947 New Look design by Dior for the Met Gala, per Harper’s Bazaar. The look was made of a white jacket with a pleated black tulle skirt, and she rounded it out with black gloves and a boater hat.
