Nicole Brown Simpson’s sisters remember her at Variety’s Power of Women event in NYC
Nicole Brown Simpson’s sisters Denise, Dominique and Tanya are continuing to uphold their sister’s legacy and helping other women who face domestic violence.
The trio took the stage at the Variety Power of Women at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in NYC on Thursday, where Denise noted, “We lost Nicole almost 30 years ago.”
Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman were murdered June 12, 1994. She was 35 years old and Goldman was just 25. Brown had called the police several times about O.J. Simpson, her husband from 1985 to 1992.
“Nicole endured incredible pain and through that pain she was able to protect her children,” Denise told attendees. “She walked away from her abuser. She was a daughter, she was a sister, she was a mother, she was a friend, she was a woman whose life was tragically cut short.”
Nicole’s sisters have participated in new Lifetime docu-series, “The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson,” that will air in June.
“I have wanted to do a documentary for 10 years, but I never felt the timing was right,” Denise previously told Variety. “I thought if I could find someone who would make Nicole’s voice be heard, and not make it about the trial or him, I would be happy.”
She further explained, “It was extremely sad when people would tell me, ‘We don’t even know what her voice sounds like.’ It broke my heart because nobody gave her that opportunity.”
Denise also discussed the Violence Against Women Act, which she helped get passed, in front of guests including Glenn Close, Nicky Hilton, Tamron Hall, and Melissa Joan Hart.
The Simpson case, often referred to as “the trial of the century,” has been back in the headlines since O.J. died from metastatic prostate cancer last month.
Producer Shonda Rhimes, “Law & Order: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” star Mariska Hargitay, singer Anitta and Amy Schumer were honored at the event, hosted by comedian Amber Ruffin.
