Nicole Kidman is glamorous in ‘Gilda’-inspired gown at Vogue World: Hollywood
The stars are out in full force at tonight’s Vogue World: Hollywood event, intentionally set in Tinseltown.
And Oscar winner Nicole Kidman opened the evening’s show, looking glamorous as ever with bouncy, brushed-out curls and bright red lips, wearing a black, draped satin bustier Chanel dress embellished with black satin camillas by the brand’s newly minted artistic director Matthieu Blazy.
In a direct tribute to one of Old Hollywood’s most famous redheads, Rita Hayworth, Kidman’s outfit recalls the black satin dress and opera gloves worn by Hayworth in the 1946 movie “Gilda,” in which the star did an improvised striptease while singing, “Put the Blame on Mame.”
Blazy, however, put his own spin on the look with the French maison’s signature camilla flowers; the look was accessorized with a Chanel Fine Jewelry Diamant Evanescent necklace comprised of hundreds of brilliant-cut diamonds.
Kidman kicked off the evening’s festivities with a pre-taped interpretation of Hayworth’s performance shot in black and white under vintage studio lights.
Tuxedo-clad backup dancers helped her zip up the form-fitting costume before the “Moulin Rouge!” actress stepped onto the Paramount lot-turned-runway to be “directed” by frequent collaborator and fellow Australian, Baz Luhrmann.
The original costume, designed by Columbia Pictures’ Jean Louis, was one of many memorable looks created for Hayworth throughout the pair’s nine-film partnership. It was last seen up for auction in 2009 with labels reading “property of Columbia Pictures” and “Rita Hayworth” sewn inside.
The “Put the Blame on Mame” scene has been imitated countless times on screen, ranging from the alluring cartoon redhead Jessica Rabbit in 1988’s “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” to the 2012 James Bond film “Skyfall.”
It was a fitting way for the newly single Australian actress — she just separated from her husband of 19 years, Keith Urban — to kick off an evening of tributes to Hollywood’s storied costume designers, past and present. It is also an apt choice for Kidman, who recently reprised her role as ambassador for Chanel, a position she last held in 2005 as the face of the French fashion house’s iconic No. 5 fragrance.
Following similar events staged in New York and Paris, the latest iteration of Vogue World shines a spotlight on the relationship between film and fashion, with a focus on some of the most stylish characters in movie history. Notably, Kendall Jenner donned Kidman’s glittery corset and top hat from “Moulin Rouge!” to open the runway portion of the show in LA.
Guests turned out in style for a parade of great film costumes alongside brilliant fashion collections curated by Vogue’s Anna Wintour and team. They were also treated to musical performances by Doja Cat and Gracie Abrams.
The celebration, staged on the Paramount Pictures Studios Lot, features the work of top Hollywood costume designers, including Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther”), Catherine Martin (“Moulin Rouge!)”, Arianne Phillips (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), Sandy Powell (“Shakespeare in Love”) and more.
Proceeds from the event will support the Entertainment Community Fund, with a special focus on helping costume professionals impacted by the LA wildfires earlier this year.
