President Trump Shades Team USA Women’s Hockey Team in Call With Men’s Team in Locker Room
President Donald Trump took a dig at the USA women’s hockey team during a celebratory call with the USA men’s team after they won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Trump, 79, hopped on the phone with the American men in the locker room after their dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Team Canada in the gold medal game on Sunday, February 22, where he invited them to the White House.
“We have medals for you guys. I must tell you, we‘re going to have to bring the women’s team,” Trump said.
The president suggested that if he didn’t invite the women, “I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
Team USA’s women’s hockey team also won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, similarly defeating Team Canada 2-1 in overtime on Thursday, February 19. Michigan native Megan Keller scored the game-winner after veteran Hilary Knight tied the game with 2:04 remaining in regulation.
In addition to a pending White House visit, Trump also floated the idea of welcoming the American men to D.C. even sooner.
“We’re giving the State of the Union speech on Tuesday night,” Trump told them. “I can send a military plane or something. But if you would like to [attend], it’s the coolest night.”
The team reacted enthusiastically to the invite, suggesting they’d have to be picked up in Florida after they celebrate their gold medal victory at E11VEN nightclub in Miami on Monday, February 23. The NHL regular season resumes on Wednesday, February 25.
“The nice thing about being president is I can tell you that you don’t have to worry about the weather or landing,” Trump said.
FBI Director Kash Patel, who was holding the phone and partying with Team USA said, “I’m f***in’ on it.”
“Congratulations, that was an unbelievable game,” Trump added. “Everyone that called me said, ‘I’m watching the hockey game.’ I don’t know of anybody who wasn’t. You’re going to be proud of that game for 50 years as you grow older. It was amazing. We love you guys. Congratulations and I hope to see you.”
Members of Team USA gushed about the opportunity to hear from the president in the euphoric aftermath of their victory, which marked the Americans’ first gold medal in men’s hockey in 46 years.
“We’re all proud Americans, obviously,” captain Auston Matthews told reporters, per The Athletic. “This is a huge moment for us, a huge moment for the United States. [Trump] called. Just congratulated us. … It’s an honor to wear this jersey and represent the U.S. To go home with a gold medal, you know how much that means to guys in this room, to people watching and rooting us on too.”
Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan said, “[Trump] just spoke to the group expressing how proud he was of the group and congratulating everybody on the win. Obviously this game, in a lot of ways, was an inspiration to our country. I think, from a viewership standpoint in the United States, there were a lot of people paying attention, the president included.”
