Prince Harry shares his unfiltered reaction to England’s heartbreaking World Cup loss
Prince Harry is upset about his home country’s crushing loss in the FIFA World Cup’s semi-finals.
Page Six asked the Duke of Sussex at the TIME100 Sports Gala in New York City Thursday if he was sad about England losing to Argentina on Wednesday, to which he replied, “of course.”
Harry attended the event solo without his wife, Meghan Markle. He was spotted chatting with TIME CEO Jessica Sibley at the event.
Argentina beat England with a score of 2 -1 after a stunning comeback. Harry wasn’t the only celeb crushed by the loss — soccer legend David Beckham attended the match in Atlanta, Georgia, and was seen wiping away tears at one point. He was later comforted by his 21-year-old son, Cruz Beckham, who gave his dad a big hug.
Harry’s older brother, Prince William, shared on X that he was “gutted” after England’s loss.
“England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all.”
“The most complete England team in a tournament,” he continued. “Hold your heads high.”
Harry, 41, recently returned from his trip back to the UK, which was filled with drama over security and not being able to stay at Buckingham Palace. Harry claimed that his invite was “withdrawn at the last moment.”
Still, he was able to bring Markle and their kids — Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5 — to the UK, where they reunited with King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Buckingham Palace confirmed on July 10 that the meeting took place at Highgrove House, the king’s private country residence in Gloucestershire, England. It marked the first time in four years that Charles, 77, had seen Archie and Lilibet.
Despite the happy reunion, royals reporter Russell Myers told People that the family trip “turned into a nightmare” due to security issues that forced Markle, 44, and their kids to head back home to California earlier than they intended.
Another source said the “Suits” alum “is very supportive” of her husband but that “there’s a lot of sadness” over how the trip turned out.
The outlet also reported that William, 44, and Harry still have “no contact” despite Harry’s recent visit with their dad.
The brothers’ current relationship is “so broken,” an insider said.
