Shailene Woodley is ready to return to Monterey.

Following the news that Francesca Sloane has been hired to write the first episode of the long-awaited third season of Big Little Lies, as reported Sept. 11 by Deadline, Woodley, 33, took to her Instagram Story to share her excitement.

“we ARE so back,” she wrote in response to a post from internet personality Blakely Thornton, which included a photo of Woodley with her costars Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz. “big little lies 3, you ready???”

Big Little Lies aired its first season in 2017 and returned for a second season in 2019, with a third season being hinted at for years.

“cause … it’s happening …,” Woodley wrote in a separate post of the show’s return.

Sloane, who most recently co-created, executive produced and served as showrunner for Mr. & Mrs. Smith at Prime Video, with Deadline also reporting that the previously greenlit second season of the Donald Glover and Maya Erskine series has been put on a “indefinite hold.”

Instead, Sloane will reportedly executive produce Big Little Lies season 3 alongside series creator David E. Kelley and stars Reese Witherpsoon and Nicole Kidman.

Big Little Lies, based on Liane Moriarty’s 2014 book of the same name, stars Witherspoon, Kidman, Dern, Kravitz and Woodley. Meryl Streep joined the cast for its second season.

Kelley told PEOPLE in June that he was “hopeful” for a third season of Big Little Lies but that “nobody’s under contract yet.”

“We’re hoping it happens,” he said at the time. “We had a great time doing the first two seasons and we all want to do it again.”

Kelley also revealed that season 3 of the HBO series will be based on Moriarty’s next book and that progress on the show was still in a “premature” stage.

“We haven’t really all gotten together to brainstorm yet, but again, it’s a great stable of talent,” he shared. “Once we do [get together], I think we have a good shot of figuring it out.”

News of an upcoming installment of the hit series first came in 2023 when Kidman said the cast would be “bringing” fans a “third” season. The actress later admitted she “didn’t realize” she wasn’t supposed to have revealed that information at the time.

“Listen, this one already went somewhere and said too much and then I get the call, the ‘ring, ring,’ like, ‘Hey, is that happening?'” Witherspoon, 49, told Vanity Fair following Kidman’s comments.

“Then I’ve got Laura calling me, and Zoë, Shailene,” Witherspoon added. “They’re all like, ‘Nic said that we’re making Big Little Lies 3.'”
