Soccer Star Alex Morgan Explains Why She’s Not Rushing to Be Her Kid’s Team Coach (Exclusive)

Despite Alex Morgan’s accomplishments on and off the soccer field, the Olympian and World Cup champion isn’t rushing to be her kid’s next team coach.

“Right now, I’m just a parent. We’ll see in the future,” Morgan, 37, exclusively shared with Us while celebrating the CVS Home Team Heroes Contest on Thursday, August 20. “I haven’t been cold-called yet, so we’ll see. I’m enjoying just being a parent and kind of being that supportive one right now.”

Besides, Morgan — who shares daughter Charlie, 6, and son Enzo, 16 months, with husband Servando Carrasco — isn’t even sure her eldest child is interested in having Mom as a coach.

“I mean, at this point, all kids need to know at 6 and 7 years old is just have fun, go out there, know that you’re getting outside, you’re staying active, you’re with your friends, you’re doing something fun,” Morgan said. “Technique and all of that stuff will come later. … I’ll bring the snacks for sure.”

Before summer comes to an end, Morgan is partnering with CVS Health to recognize youth soccer players who are making a meaningful difference in their communities. From now until September 25, parents or guardians can nominate soccer athletes aged 7 to 15 who exemplify leadership, service and positive community impact, both on and off the field.

Two grand prize winners will be awarded a $25,000 grant in their name to their nonprofit soccer organization, and their photo will also be featured on packaging for select Well Market snacks, CVS Pharmacy’s store brand consumables line.

“Teaming up with CVS and their Home Team Heroes Contest is great,” Morgan explained. “It highlights girls and kids that are really doing the work and putting in the work to be able to impact their lives and their futures, but also those around them.”

As Morgan eagerly awaits the arrival of her third baby this fall, the Alex Morgan Foundation founder is happy to receive positive feedback from teachers, coaches and parents about her own kids, including her first grader.

“I think one of the biggest compliments I can receive is that my daughter was very helpful, and that she was caring,” Morgan shared. “Whether she shared her toys or her snack or she listened. … Having her rally other people with her is always great to hear.”

With kids heading back to school and soccer programs kicking off again, Morgan hopes as many children as possible can experience a sport she grew up loving.

At the same time, the Togethxr cofounder is reminding parents that winning isn’t everything.

“There’s a time and place for criticism or improvement or feedback, and a lot of that falls on the coach. But as a parent, you want to be their first line of support and their first line of confidence when maybe a child is lacking that based on a game that they weren’t proud of or happy with,” Morgan said. “You’re the one that’s supposed to help them feel proud and feel like they want to keep showing up again and again.”
