Sting says not making kids work is ‘a form of abuse’
Sting is giving his kids tough love.
The former frontman of The Police said he believes that not making kids work is “a form of abuse.”
“I think the worst thing you can do to a kid is say, ‘You don’t have to work,’” the musician declared on “CBS Sunday Morning” over the weekend.
“I think that’s a form of abuse that I hope I’m never guilty of,” Sting, born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, added.
The 74-year-old, who has six children from two marriages, gushed that his kids have all “been blessed with this extraordinary work ethic.”
“Whether it’s the DNA of it or whether I’ve said to them, ‘Guys, you got to work,’” he added.
“‘I’m spending our money. I’m paying for your education. You’ve got shoes on your feet. Go to work,’” Sting shared.
“That’s not cruel. I think that there’s a kindness there and a trust in them that they will make their own way. They’re tough, my kids.”
When asked if his children have ever complained about the arrangement, Sting replied, “No … not to my face, they don’t!”
The 17-time Grammy winner — who has an estimated net worth of $550 million — has publicly spoken out about his beliefs when it comes to his wealth and his kids in the past.
Back in 2014, he revealed that his kids won’t be getting trust funds from his vast fortune.
At the time, Sting told the Mail on Sunday that the wealth would be “albatrosses” around the necks of his six children.
“People make assumptions that they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth, but they have not been given a lot,” he told the outlet, adding that “there won’t be much money left because we are spending it!”
Notably, the “Dune” actor came from humble beginnings, growing up in a shipbuilding community in northeast England.
He was previously married to actress Frances Tomelty from 1976 to 1984. The former couple shares two children: Joe, 49, and Fuschia, 44.
Following Sting and Tomelty’s split in the early ’80s, the hitmaker married Trudie Styler in August 1992. They share four children: Mickey, 42, Jake, 40, Eliot, 35, and Giacomo, 30.
