Sydney Sweeney shared exactly what she ate to gain 35 pounds ahead of filming boxer biopic Christy.
“It was a huge undertaking,” she explained on Sirius XM on Wednesday, October 29. “The emotional toll of the span of [Christy’s] lifetime, there’s a lot of growth, and a lot of pain and a lot of understanding.” She added, “The physical change that I also undertook was a lot.”
Sweeney shared that she had “about two and a half months to train leading up to it and [she] put on 35 pounds.”
“It was a lot of prep,” she noted. “I was eating everything.” She then turned and looked at her cast members and giggled, “My smuckers! That was my nickname on set because I ate so many [Uncrustables].”
She added that she drank “so many protein shakes,” which she didn’t quite enjoy. “I would just plug my nose and down them. Ugh, it was a lot,” she reminisced. Sweeney also nodded when she was asked if she had a lot of “egg whites” and “chicken.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the actress opened up about the “immense weight” she took on while playing Martin, now 57.
“Christy’s story is beyond important to tell. She is inspiring and an ultimate underdog. She completely changed the way that women in sports and boxing have gone on in time past her,” Sweneey said. “I knew that every single detail that was going to go into this, every choice that I made, was going to be an important one. Having Christy by my side during it was the biggest gift I could have asked for.”
She then gushed about her relationship with Martin, saying, “I always felt like I could turn to her for everything. She gave me some really great pointers when we were fighting. She would yell at me different swings I needed to do.”
Sweeney previously opened up about her physical transformation, telling Vanity Fair in September that she felt “very strong and powerful.”
“I loved it. Being able to lose myself to become a vessel for somebody else is my dream,” she explained.
The actress, who trained in jiu jitsu, grappling and kickboxing as a teenager, added that it took her some time to learn proper boxing stances and techniques.
“You square up differently, and, of course, you don’t get brought to the ground — everything’s on your feet,” she explained.
She added that her figure was “completely different” from how she normally looks. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes.,” Sweeney said. “’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, ‘Oh, my God,’” she said.
The Anyone But You star added that she felt proud of herself and that it was an “amazing” experience. “I was so strong, like, crazy strong.”
Christy is set to premiere in theaters on November 7.
