Tara Lipinski Calls Daughter Georgie ‘My Biggest Gold Medal’ on Anniversary of Olympic Victory

Tara Lipinski may be an Olympic gold medalist, but one prize is even greater – her daughter.
Lipinski, who defeated Michelle Kwan and Lu Chen to win gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, was just 15 when she became the youngest winner of an individual event in the Games’ history.
To mark the anniversary of her triumphant Feb. 20, 1998 victory, Lipinski, 42, shared a touching Instagram tribute to her daughter Georgie, whom she welcomed with husband Todd Kapostasy via surrogate in October 2023.
“February 20th. A day that changed my life forever,” wrote Lipinski in her post. “What I did this day I’m proud of- I was able to fight through all the nerves and demons that every athlete faces in that very moment when they know it’s up to them to make the dream happen.”
The figure skater said that competing in the Olympics is “a lot of pressure to withstand,” which makes her “proud of all the years leading up to this moment.”
She reflected on her younger self, saying that one of the things she hopes still stays with her as she gets older is the power of believing that anything is possible.

Speaking about her now role as one of NBC’s lead figure skating announcers, which she fulfills with Terry Gannon and longtime friend Johnny Weir, she wrote that she is “lucky” that skating is still her “first love.”
“And then I grabbed Georgie from her crib and I realized a lot of hard work and hard days went into this very embryo becoming our sweet Georgie. She’s my biggest gold medal. How sweet life is with her,” Lipinski wrote.
“I hope I can remind her about the power of dreaming through out her own life. It makes life that much more magical,” she continued.
Lipinski ended her post by stating that while she is grateful for what happened on Feb. 20, 1998, she is “even more grateful” for where she is on Feb. 20, 2025.
The broadcaster became a mom after a five year journey with infertility. After becoming a mom, she told PEOPLE that she had “dreamt about this for so long.”
“A crying baby, sleepless nights. Even when I’m like, ‘Okay, take an hour nap,’ I’m almost too excited. I’m like, ‘She’s there. Just watch her a little longer,” said Lipinski. “It’s the best tired I’ve ever been.”

Next year’s Winter Olympics will be in Milano Cortina, Italy.
