Taylor Swift’s New Album Dropped on His Divorce Day. So He Threw a ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together’ Bash (Exclusive)

For Kevin L., a Los Angeles local, Taylor Swift’s music has always mirrored his life in uncanny ways. He’s the same age as the singer-songwriter, and his wedding on Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, happened to coincide with the release of Midnights.

Then, just six months ago, when Kevin learned his divorce would be finalized on Friday, Oct. 3, 2025, his friends joked, “What if Taylor releases another album that day?” — especially since 10/3 adds up to 13, the singer’s lucky number. Sure enough, in August, Swift announced The Life of a Showgirl would drop on that exact date — a coincidence so perfectly absurd it felt scripted.

As surreal as it seemed, Kevin decided to embrace it. If he was going to face something as painful as a divorce, he figured he might as well find a way to laugh through it. So as the day approached, he knew exactly how to mark the moment — with a “We Are Never Getting Back Together” party full of music, friends and laughter.

“Just like Taylor was unintentionally such an important component of our wedding day, it was crazy fitting that she would also be such an important part of my divorce day,” Kevin says. “Tayuniverse works in mysterious ways!”

For the party, Kevin wore a replica sequin shirt like the one Swift wore on the Eras Tour, emblazoned with the lyrics “We Are Never Getting Back Together. Like Ever.” He also created custom party favors — can koozies printed with the phrase “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and matchboxes stamped with “Like Ever” in foil lettering.

Some of the hanging signs read “In My Divorced Era,” while the décor leaned heavily into Swift’s Showgirl aesthetic. “I had lots of orange The Life of a Showgirl-themed food and décor throughout,” Kevin says. “Signature orange glitter margaritas and a glittery orange cake.”

Throughout the night, guests danced and sang karaoke to all kinds of songs — not just Swift’s.

“I have such an amazing, supportive group of friends, family and coworkers that attended the party,” he says. “There were almost 50 of us packed into my house and backyard, enjoying endless tacos from our catered grill and endless tequila. Even friends who despise Taylor still showed up to support.”

“We even had a piñata shaped like a dumpster fire so I could get out a little frustration,” Kevin adds. “It was emotional and healing — a reminder that even though one relationship was ending, I’m still surrounded by so many meaningful relationships that matter just as much.”

After the party, Kevin shared photos from the celebration on Instagram.

While he admits that posting about or “celebrating” a divorce might seem unconventional, he wanted to show his friends and family that he’s doing okay, and that he’s determined to stay positive and make the best of any situation.

“Taylor Swift is always honest in her lyrics, sharing both the good and the bad moments in life,” he says. “I appreciate that honesty and want to do the same.”

To his surprise, the post quickly took off online.

“I could see more and more people using the repost feature,” Kevin says. “Something about it must’ve resonated with them, it naturally started to appear on a lot of people’s feeds.”

“There have been so many amazing comments of support from strangers — one of the bright sides of social media,” he continues. “Some called it ‘iconic,’ while others said they related or felt inspired.”

Looking back, Kevin says he doesn’t want to define his life by Taylor Swift, the uncanny parallels — albums being released on his wedding and divorce days — still bring a smile to his face.

“The universe may be playing a joke on me,” he says, “but I can laugh along as well.”

“What was initially a sad day turned into a joyous one,” Kevin adds. “And that’s what I’ll remember every October when this date comes around. Whether it’s the support of friends in real life, strangers on the internet, or artists and their music, my advice is to always remember there are so many ways to get through difficult moments — and that you are never alone.”
