‘The Naked Gun’: Where to Watch the Cast’s Best Comedy Movies and Shows

Published

on

The Naked Gun shot into theaters this week, and it’s squirt-soda-out-of-your-nose levels of funny.

Many of the cast members, like Liam Neeson and Danny Huston, are better known for their drama or action roles than their comedy — but they’ve all shown major comedy talents in the past.

If you loved The Naked Gun and want to see more of the cast’s best and funniest work, Watch With Us has picked out some of the key movies and TV shows you don’t want to miss.

Danny Huston as Richard Cane – ‘Game Night’ (2018)

Huston’s deep voice and intimidating demeanor make him a natural bad guy — but that gravitas works really well against a comedic backdrop. In Game Night, he plays a billionaire collector of Fabergé eggs named Donald Anderton, whose underground fight club is discovered during Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams’ game night-gone-horribly-wrong.

This underrated comedy is full of twists and laugh-out-loud moments. In addition to Huston, the cast includes comedy favorites such as Lamorne Morris and Chelsea Peretti.

You can rent Game Night on YouTube or Apple TV+.

Netflix just debuted Happy Gilmore 2 this month, right around the same time it’s losing the original Happy Gilmore to a rival streamer. Bummer. Fortunately, Netflix is still the streaming home for older comedies like Ben Stiller‘s Zoolander. The sequel is on Netflix as well, but the original is better. Going back even further in […]

Pamela Anderson as Beth Davenport – ‘Scooby Doo’ (2002)

The Naked Gun is by far the best comedy Pamela Anderson has ever been in — most of her comedic roles have involved her playing herself, and the joke has just been “she’s hot.”

The underrated live-action Scooby Doo movie is no exception to that rule, but Anderson’s portrayal and line delivery are top-notch as she thanks the Mystery Gang for their help at the beginning of the movie. She delivers her few lines with the perfect amount of self-aware ditziness. Written by James Gunn, this movie was a bit ahead of its time — and is definitely worth a rewatch.

Amazon Prime Video is one of the few streamers that has a robust selection of older comedy movies that goes back several decades. This month, one of the ’80s’ best comedies, A Fish Called Wanda, is back on Prime Video. Prime Video has also recently added Game Night, a hilarious 2018 movie starring Jason Bateman […]

Paul Walter Hauser as Capt. Ed Hocken Jr. – ‘The Afterparty’

Paul Walter Hauser has excelled at performing funny or bizarre roles in dramas or dramedies like Black Bird or I, Tonya. But when he really leans into comedy, he’s hysterical — as he is in season 2 of The Afterparty. Each season of this murder mystery comedy series has episodes in a variety of styles, depending on the point of view of the suspect who is being interrogated about the murder in question.

In the second season, a groom (Zach Woods) is murdered on his wedding night. Hauser plays Travis, the bride’s ex-boyfriend who is convinced — despite all evidence to the contrary — that she is still in love with him. His episode unfolds like a neo-noir detective story — with hilarious results. This ensemble comedy stars Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao, to name a few.

Liam Neeson as Chief Inspector Byers – ‘Derry Girls’

Neeson has used his deadpan style and his reputation as a tough guy action star in quite a few comedic roles — his role as “Bad Cop/Good Cop” in The Lego Movie gets honorable mention here — but the funniest and most unexpected appearance was in the final season of Derry Girls.

In season 3, episode 1 of this period comedy set in Northern Ireland, the lead characters (Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, and Dylan Llewellyn) face a police interrogation by none other than Chief Inspector Byers (played by Neeson, who himself grew up in Northern Ireland). Though the teenagers are intimidated, they wind up setting the officer against the most boring man in the world — notorious storyteller Colm McCool (Kevin McAleer). The results are ridiculously entertaining.
