We Were Liars’ Family Dinner Has a Head Injury and Addiction Reveal as Cadence’s Memory Returns

We Were Liars’ Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) is starting to get her memory back — and remembers that there was a fire on Beechwood Island.

The Prime Video show’s seventh episode, titled “Everybody Knows That the Captain Lied,” had the Sinclair family getting together for dinner after Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) left Beechwood Island in Summer 16. Tensions at the table came to a head when the remaining Liars — Cadence, Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) — started a fight with their grandfather, Harris (David Morse), by disobeying his rules for a perfect life (and calling out his disapproval of Gat).

Cadence followed Harris outside to continue their conversation about Gat.

“I have high standards, Cadence, I will not apologize for them,” Harris stated.

Emily Alyn Lind didn’t really keep that We Were Liars twist in the back of her mind while filming the Prime Video show. Spoilers for We Were Liars season 1 below. “The Liars in Summer 17, once they’re ghosts — that feels weird saying that [out] loud,” Lind, 23, told Us Weekly exclusively ahead of […]

Cadence replied that he “tolerated” Gat and his uncle Ed’s (Rahul Kohl) presence on Beechwood every summer.

During their argument, Harris takes a misstep and falls down the outdoor steps, cracking his head, which started bleeding on the concrete. (This was the emergency Gat saw on the mainland at the end of the previous episode.)

The moms — Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), Bess (Candice King) and Carrie (Mamie Gummer) — work quickly to get their dad help but get in fights with their respective children in the process. Penny requested a reluctant Cadence find Harris’ will and burn it if they don’t get enough inheritance. Bess and Mirren go at each other, and Johnny reveals that Carrie has been hiding Percocet, hinting that she relapsed.

We Were Liars got viewers invested in the Sinclairs matriarchs — but who should play the younger versions of the beloved moms in the Family of Liars prequel series? Based on E. Gat made his surprise return to Beechwood while the moms are at the hospital with Harris, who is still very much alive. While sitting around a fire, drinking their grandfather’s expensive bourbon, The Liars formulate a plan. (Cadence does, indeed, burn Harris’ will, but it’s because she is the only grandchild given Beechwood.)

“What if we made a mess so big, only a Sinclair could clean it up?” Cadence wondered to The Liars. “What if all the petty material things that tore our family apart were just gone?”

Back in present day (Summer 17), Cadence starts to remember the night her grandfather got hurt.

“There was a fire. I remember it now,” she says. “We burnt this place to the ground.”
