What to Watch This Weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 1): 8 Best New Movies and Shows to Stream Now (Including 3 Beloved Book Adaptations!)

Published

on

It pains us to write it, but the last weekend of summer is here — and thankfully, there’s plenty in theaters and streaming to keep us occupied.

This weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, kick back and relax for the last bank holiday for a while. Who cares that the warm rays of sunshine and beach days are coming to an end? We’ve got book adaptations, Austin Butler being “so hot” (costar Liev Schreiber said it himself!) and your next The Summer I Turned Pretty-esque binge in store.

Over in reality TV and documentary land, we have some fun throwbacks from the question of who stole America’s most famous pair of shoes to a look into the Chrisley family’s life after prison.

And there’s more! Here’s a list of the eight best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them.

Caught Stealing

Based on the book of the same name, Caught Stealing is a tale about the dangers of cat-sitting.

Hank (Butler) is just trying to get through life with his girlfriend Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz), but when his neighbor, punk rock and mohawked Russ (Matt Smith), asks him to watch his cat while he’s gone, he’s suddenly accused of withholding drug money from Russian thugs. Now, he’s on the run for his life.

Caught Stealing releases in theaters Aug. 29.

The Roses

Some people just aren’t meant to be together. And Olivia Colman’s Ivy and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Theo are starting to get the sense that they may not be the most compatible (read: they are awful together) in The Roses.

If you think this is Marriage Story 2.0, you’d be wrong, though. Colman and Cumberbatch set aside the sad aspects of divorce and instead engage in an all-out war, perfectly and comically encapsulating their hatred for each other.

The Roses releases in theaters Aug. 29.

The Thursday Murder Club

This isn’t your average old-people-doing-silly-things movie. In The Thursday Murder Club, four septuagenarians are taking on the most difficult task of all: solving not one, not two, but three murders. With due wit and sass, of course.

Starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie, the book-to-film adaptation has just the right amount of quirk and comedy as well as suspenseful intrigue as murders continue to pile up — and the solution might be closer to home than any of the retirees like to think.

Watch The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix.

My Life With the Walter Boys season 2

The Summer I Turned Pretty may only have a few episodes left this season but fans of a twisted brother love triangle can rejoice: another show is back to fill its place.

My Life With the Walter Boys returns for season 2, and this time Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) has some tough decisions to make in her love life: Alex (Ashby Gentry) or Cole (Noah LaLonde)?

Love Thy Nader

Straight from the Bayou (and a steamy season of Dancing with the Stars … ), the Nader sisters are ready to take on New York City.

And if you were somehow craving even more of the Gleb Savchenko and Brooks Nader TikTok relationship drama … well, you’re going to get it here.

The Chrisleys: Back to Reality

The Chrisleys were just released from prison in May, but they wasted no time getting back in front of the cameras for their newest reality show, The Chrisleys: Back to Reality.

This season, Todd and Julie Chrisley’s daughter, Savannah, pulls back the curtain on her journey to free her parents and doubles down on her persistent claims of their innocence. Meanwhile, Todd and Julie face the reality of their relationship after three years apart.

Katrina: Come Hell and High Water

It’s been 20 years since Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, leaving at least 12,000 displaced and killing nearly 1,400 people.

Now, those who lost loved ones and experienced the effects of Katrina are opening up in a new documentary that looks back at the repercussions of the devastating storm.

Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair of Shoes

Arguably America’s most famous shoes, the iconic ruby red slippers worn in The Wizard of Oz have undergone an era of mystery after they were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Mich.

An ABC documentary looks into who stole the slippers and the journey the shoes have been on — including FBI involvement.
