When Is the Will Trent Season 4 Release Date? Here’s What ABC Has Teased So Far About the Show

NEED TO KNOW
- Will Trent debuted on ABC in January 2023, and its season 3 finale aired in May 2025
- The police procedural is based on the books by Karin Slaughter and stars Ramón Rodriguez
- The TV show scored a season 4 renewal in April 2025, with new episodes expected to premiere in 2026
Where there’s a Will Trent, there’s a way because the special agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) is back on the case.
The ABC police procedural series, based on the books by Karin Slaughter, first debuted in January 2023 and wrapped up its third season in May 2025.
Will Trent follows the sharp-eyed titular character, played by Ramón Rodríguez, as he solves crimes with the help of his GBI co-workers, while also being a dog dad to a chihuahua named Betty (Bluebell).
“This is a crime drama that has a lot of heart and doesn’t take itself so serious,” Rodríguez told PEOPLE in January 2023. “There’s some seriousness, there’s some drama, but yet we are able to thread the needle with including some humor in there and levity.”
The actor also enjoys how Will “interprets the crime scene visually and how he can put his story together. He can walk on a crime scene and read it like nobody else,” he added.
So as the show’s ratings continue soaring and earning another renewal, when is Will Trent season 4 premiering? Here’s what to know about the ABC series’ next episodes.
Is Will Trent coming back for season 4?
Yes, Will Trent has been renewed for a fourth season. Per Deadline, the upcoming season will consist of 18 episodes.
Rodriguez will be in front of and behind the camera for the next installment. The series star helmed the season 3 premiere, and in a June 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said he “will definitely be directing at least one episode next season.”
“It makes the most sense for me to direct the premiere as I did this past season,” he explained. “I love that pressure of having to set the bar for a season.”
When is the Will Trent season 4 release date?
Although an exact premiere date for Will Trent has not been announced, season 4 is scheduled to debut in early 2026, according to ABC.
This follows the show’s established release pattern: Season 1 and 3 began airing in January, while season 2 hit TVs in February.
Who will be in the Will Trent season 4 cast?
It hasn’t been confirmed which cast members are returning for Will Trent season 4.
Rodríguez, Erika Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin and Sonja Sohn comprise the main cast, who have appeared in all 41 episodes of the series.
Gina Rodriguez joined the Will Trent cast in season 3, playing assistant district attorney Marion Alba, who ended up dating Will. The Jane the Virgin star appeared in 10 episodes of the most recent season, and while she is not confirmed for season 4, there is the possibility of her making an appearance at some point.
“It was an amazing experience to work with her, and I wouldn’t rule out her coming back in Season 4 at all,” co-showrunner Liz Heldens told TV Line in April 2025.
Scott Foley was also a new addition for the third season, playing Dr. Seth McDale. It is unclear whether Foley will return for season 4, but the show’s creatives are open to working around the actor’s schedule to have him appear again.
“We can shoot him in and out of our show pretty easily … in a day for an episode, so we’ll see how that all unfolds,” Heldens revealed in a May 2025 TV Line interview.
Similarly, Will’s biological father, Sheriff Caleb Roussard (Yul Vazquez), was introduced at the end of season 3, but it has not been announced if he will return for more episodes.
What have the Will Trent creators said about season 4?
The Will Trent creators have teased that there are some new challenges ahead for the series’ characters.
In a May 2025 interview with Screen Rant, co-showrunner Daniel Thomsen said by the end of season 3, “every character on the show is going through a little bit of a seismic change. And it’s a change that keeps them together in a way that we can continue making the show.”
Family will also be a central theme in season 4, after the introduction of Will’s biological father, Sheriff Caleb.
“It seemed like there was opportunity in giving Will a father that could be positive and could also have really negative qualities that we could explore in Season 4,” Heldens told TV Line.
Thomsen explained, “Adding Caleb provides so many story opportunities that we’re excited about exploring.”
Where can I watch Will Trent?
The first three seasons of Will Trent are available to stream on Hulu.
