Why Khloé Kardashian is main caretaker for ex Tristan Thompson’s ‘severely disabled’ brother

Khloé Kardashian became the primary caretaker for ex Tristan Thompson’s disabled brother, Amari, due to the athlete’s busy career.

“He is severely disabled. Amari has LGS [Lennox-Gastaut syndrome], which is a form of epilepsy, and he is disabled; he can’t walk or talk,” the reality star shared during Wednesday’s episode of her “Khloé in Wonder Land” podcast.

Kardashian, 41, said Tristan and Amari’s mother, Andrea Thompson, was the “sole caretaker” for the 18-year-old in Canada until she passed away from a heart attack in January 2023.

After Andrea’s death, the “Kardashians” star — along with her family and the Cleveland Cavaliers player — “took Amari back with us to the States.”

“Tristan is in the NBA and he is in a different state, literally, every other day or every few days, and it’s just not conducive for Amari to be on that many planes,” she explained.

“Amari has a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy that he has.”

Because of Tristan’s hectic NBA career, the mom of two chose to keep Amari in Los Angeles with her.

“I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him because it’s not good that he travels,” she shared.

“California weather is so good for Amari and I just love having Amari be a part of my family,” the Hulu star added.

Kardashian said she hired two “sensational caretakers” to help care for Amari.

“We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how. And he deserves that.”

Kardashian, who shares daughter True, 7, and son Tatum, 3, with Tristan, said she believes having Amari around is “important” for her kids, nieces and nephews “to be exposed to all different types of people in the world.”

“I think it teaches everyone compassion, understanding. It opens up their minds to seeing, ‘Wow, Amari is disabled, sure, but he’s also just like us at the same time,’” she said.

“And I love seeing how Amari lights up when he’s around the kids. He’s just such an amazing young man.”

In February, Tristan, 34, became the legal guardian over Amari after their mother, Andrea, passed away.

The NBA champion first filed for temporary guardianship over the teen in September 2023, claiming their father, Trevor Thompson, had played no role in raising Amari since 2014.

Tristan was allowed to manage his brother’s finances — including the $103,475 inheritance he received from his late mother — and to travel both domestically and internationally with him, in addition to making decisions on his living arrangements and more.

Kardashian and the athlete split for good in 2021 after Maralee Nichols filed a paternity lawsuit against Tristan over her son, Theo, who was born in December of that year.

In January 2022, the basketball star publicly admitted to being the father of the newborn and also issued a public apology to Kardashian for humiliating her.
