Why Whoopi Goldberg isn’t on ‘The View’ this week
Whoopi Goldberg won’t be appearing on “The View” this week because she is out of the country.
The “Sister Act” actress confirmed that she would not be appearing in any of this week’s episodes of the ABC talk show in a post shared via her Instagram Story Monday.
“If you notice I’m not on ‘The View’ this week it’s because I’m in Italy working,” she captioned a photo of herself seated in a makeup chair.
She then posted a second video in which she was trying to speak Italian while getting a manicure.
Goldberg, 70, was noticeably MIA during Monday’s episode of the show, leaving her co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin to fend for themselves.
The actress — who celebrated her 70th birthday with an over-the-top, on-air celebration last Thursday — previously shared that she would be starring in the Italian soap opera “Un Posto Al Sole.”
“They know it’s a crazy idea, I know it’s a crazy idea, but what a wonderful thing to do,” she told fans in an Instagram video in June.
“I’m looking forward to it. I’m excited,” she continued. “No, my Italian is not perfect, but we’ve worked it out. Ciao! See you on TV.”
Goldberg’s multi-episode cameo is scheduled to air next year.
The comedian admitted that she took on the role because she was looking for ways to fill her time.
“I only know soap operas here,” she said on Monday’s episode of the show’s “Behind the Table” podcast.
“I love a soap opera. I love it. I don’t know how they work there. I don’t know if they do four lines from here, three lines from there. I don’t know how it works. But it will all be new.”
Goldberg also joked to her co-hosts that she wished they could join her.
“I might be able to shoot something on my cell … It’s time. It’s time for me to do some things in addition to this,” she said.
Goldberg’s hiatus follows Behar’s mysterious two-episode absence from the show — which was later confirmed to be due to a foot injury.
