Will ‘Outer Banks’ Have a Crossover Episode With ‘Runarounds’ Spinoff Despite Not Being ‘Connected’? (Exclusive)

While Prime Video’s The Runarounds is related to Outer Banks — and even shares some similar actors — the TV universe isn’t “connected” enough for a crossover (yet).
During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, The Runarounds cast William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock and Jesse Golliher weighed in on reuniting with Outer Banks stars on screen after their season 3 cameo.
“I think [our band] were just established enough to get a wedding anniversary gig on Outer Banks,” Ellis said of the scene that paved the way for their own show. “They were still a high school band kind of learning the ropes. They probably messed up a thing or two with that.”
Murdock, meanwhile, noted that the brief crossover was “not meant to be taken super seriously” by fans.
“That was more for us in real life to go off the creation,” he added. “That doesn’t have much to do with the universe.”
The band at the center of The Runarounds isn’t ruling out an official crossover in the future. (Eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed J. Anthony Crane and Cullen Moss making cameos in different roles during season 1 of The Runarounds.)
“That’d be great. That’d be fun,” Yun told Us. “We would be lucky to work with [them] as now the universes aren’t connected.”
Netflix introduced Us to Outer Banks in 2020, which follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in a coastal North Carolina town — with a side of treasure hunting. Outer Banks catapulted stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant and Austin North to fame before Netflix confirmed in November 2024 that season 5 would be the show’s last.
During season 3, which premiered in 2023, The Runarounds were seen in the background playing at an anniversary party for Kiara’s (Bailey) parents. Based on a teleplay from Jonas Pate and David Wilcox, the fictional series, which is streaming now, follows the real band of the same name featuring Lipton, Ellis, Yun, Murdock and Golliher.
“The time we met we played a bunch of music together,” Ellis recalled about the support they received from the Outer Banks cast. “But we also tried to act out some scenes. Thankfully we had Mr. Chase Stokes there with us just really coaching us.”
He continued: “It was our first time ever trying acting really. So he was awesome and had he not been there, I don’t know if I would be here.”
Viewers tuning into The Runarounds will be thrilled to know that Pate confirmed in December 2024 that Prime Video already ordered a second season before the show even premiered. He also revealed that he was writing a prequel to Outer Banks, titled Kildare. The series is still in the early stages but would feature a whole new set of young actors and focus on the founding of each group in the show’s fictional Figure 8 town.
Outer Banks is currently streaming on Netflix while The Runarounds is out on Prime Video.
