Eric Stonestreet Reveals Which Iconic Modern Family Lines Fans Ask Him to Recite the Most (Exclusive)

Eric Stonestreet says Modern Family fans still stop to ask him to recite some of his most famous lines five years after the beloved series wrapped.

While there are dozens of iconic moments from the show, Stonestreet says “a lot of people” ask him to yell out for his character Cameron Tucker’s daughter, Lily, or the French Bulldog, Stella.

“They ask me to yell ‘Stella,'” the 53-year-old exclusively tells PEOPLE at the Dexter: Resurrection World Premiere in New York City, mimicking, “‘Can you yell ‘Stella’ or ‘Lily?'”

Another popular request relates to a scene in the first season in which Tucker nearly breaks his car window with a metal trash can after accidentally locking Lily inside.

“Oh, the window scene where I’m breaking the window. Lock the baby in the car. Those are popular ones for people to ask me about,” he adds.

Stonestreet portrayed Tucker on the hit ABC sitcom alongside his on-screen husband, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily, and his fictional in-laws, Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, and Rico Rodriguez. 

The 11-season series premiered in September 2009 and concluded in April 2020, winning a total of 22 Primetime Emmy Awards during its impressive run.

When talking with PEOPLE earlier in the year, Stonestreet admitted that the cast remains “such a close unit” and is still “in communication with each other” via group chat.

“We all love each other. It was no doubt from the beginning of that,” he said of meeting everyone for the first time. “This is dark and macabre, but I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I have a whole lot of new people that I’m going to grow old with and know for the rest of my life.’ ”

While fans surely have their favorite moments from the show, Stonestreet said it was less about one hit scene or funny line and more about “the collective of how we work together and love each other.”

“I feel our love for each other dictated how great the show was — in addition to the writing, the directing, the sets and all that stuff,” he told PEOPLE at the time. “But there’s no way that show is successful, as successful as it was, without us being individually great people and then collaborating with great people as well.”
