Phoebe Bridgers seemingly lifts lid on Paul Mescal split, relationship with Gracie Abrams in new music

Phoebe Bridgers seemingly gave fans a peek inside her split from Paul Mescal — and his subsequent romance with Gracie Abrams — in her newest track.

According to fans on social media, in the title track from her newest album, “Lost Weekend” — which dropped on Friday — Bridgers, 31, apparently hints that she was the one to initiate her split from Mescal, 30, back in 2022, crooning, “I’m supposed to be married, but I called it off.” 

And in “The Governors Waltz,” netizens speculated, Bridgers seems to speak directly to Abrams, whom Mescal began dating in 2024.

“Now, let’s see how far I can run without stopping / And she can pretend to be me / Since she took my place in my bed on that stage / I have not lost any sleep / Being myself wasn’t easy / Do it for me,” she sings.

On social media, fans sounded off on what they called the “shade” towards Abrams, with one person writing on X, “Phoebe bridgers throwing gracie abrams shade, im home.”

Another quipped, “Phoebe bridgers wins grammy for coming up with most beautiful elegant way to call paul mescal a bum,” while a third chimed in, “I listened to this song, but far from Phoebe Bridgers putting down Gracie Abrams, it felt like she was actually expressing gratitude toward her.”

Yet another joked, “The Phoebe Bridgers and Gracie Abrams beef is like Kendrick vs Drake for us indie kids,” referencing Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s longstanding feud.

Reps for Bridgers, Mescal and Abrams did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.

Bridgers and Mescal began dating back in 2020, making their red carpet debut at the 2021 LACMA Art+Film Gala in November 2021.

The musician and “Normal People” made things Instagram official a month later in December 2025, sharing a PDA selfie via Instagram.

In December 2022, however, amid rumors they’d split after two years of dating, the “Motion Sickness” hitmaker cryptically shared heartbreak advice during a YouTube interview.

“You just have to do it,” she said of overcoming heartbreak during an episode of Amelia Dimoldenberg’s “Chicken Shop Date” series.

When asked what she’s been “taught” by the experience of heartbreak, Bridgers responded, “I think if I had figured that out, I wouldn’t be making music still.”

Dimoldenberg ventured to ask the songstress if she thought Mescal’s series was “overrated,” to which Bridgers replied that it was “very appropriately rated.”

Following their split, Mescal spoke out about the defunct relationship becoming “Twitter fodder” in 2023.

“I definitely feel the temptation to say the status of my whatever — that will always be there,” he told Vanity Fair at the time.

“The temptation still exists to be like, ‘Shut the f–k up. This is my life,” he continued. “This is what’s going on. Or this is what’s not going on.’”

The actor said he strives to keep his personal life “private … moving forward,” hoping to “drown … out” speculation.

“A lot of the time people are kind about their support for me,” Mescal told the outlet. “That’s my predominant experience.”
