David Harbour Breaks Silence on Ex Lily Allen’s Bombshell ‘West End Girl’ Album: ‘It Was Weird’
David Harbour apparently has no love lost after ex Lily Allen dropped her bombshell-laden breakup album West End Girl last year.
“It was weird. I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art,” Harbour, 51, told Variety in an interview published Wednesday, June 10. “So, I respect her for doing that.”
Allen, 41, released West End Girl last fall, presumably inspired by the demise of her marriage to Harbour amid accusations of infidelity. (Harbour never publicly addressed the allegations. Us Weekly reached out for comment at the time.)
“I can’t really say that much more because it’s my private life,” he told Variety. “In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it. I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won’t speak about that.”
Without directly addressing the now-viral accusations, Harbour insisted that he still respects Allen’s creative process.
“Stories are complex, and that’s why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn’t my experience,” the Stranger Things alum stated. “My ability to use my experience comes through in the creation of DTF [St. Louis]. I want to make things that make people feel safer. My particular talent is in allowing people to feel like they’re not alone.”
As for Allen, she has maintained that West End Girl is indicative of her real life.
“It’s not a cruel album,” Allen told Interview in October 2025. “I don’t feel like I’m being mean. It was just the feelings I was processing at the time. I feel very differently about the whole situation now. We all go through breakups, and it’s always f***ing brutal. But I don’t think it’s that often that you feel inclined to write about it while you’re in it.”
Allen further stated, “I don’t need revenge. That’s what’s fun about this record; it’s viscerally like going through the motions. At the time, I was really trying to process things, and that’s great in terms of the album, but I don’t feel confused or angry now.”
Allen has since moved on, stating that she doesn’t hold a grudge against her ex.
“It was very important to me that I didn’t sound like a victim, so I’d be like, ‘We have to change that line. It just sounds too, ‘Poor me,’” she said at the time. “I wanted it to feel brutal and tragic, but also empowering, that there was joy in being able to express it.”
Harbour and Allen, who also shares two daughters with ex-husband Sam Cooper, were married from 2020 to 2024. The British pop star wrote West End Girl in the span of 10 days after their separation in December 2024.
