Dylan O’Brien’s trans sibling exposes year-long estrangement, calls out actor’s supportive interview
Dylan O’Brien’s trans sibling claimed they have been estranged for a year despite the actor voicing his support for the LGBTQIA+ community last year.
Julz O’Brien, who uses they/them pronouns, made the allegations while reacting to a resurfaced interview from 2024 in which Dylan said he was “grateful” to have trans people in his life like his younger sibling.
“I have a trans, nonbinary sibling and I know people in my personal life as well who are queer, and I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world,” Dylan told Vulture in January 2024 while reflecting on his role in the upcoming queer drama, “Ponyboi.”
The Instagram account, Gay Times, shared Dylan’s supportive words for the LGBTQIA+ community, prompting Julez to comment on the post that they haven’t heard from the “Teen Wolf” star in “over a year.”
“He didn’t check in when I had top surgery,” Julz wrote in a comment under the May 1 Instagram post.
“He didn’t even wish me happy bday last week!” they continued before adding sarcastically, “But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more.”
Julz also slammed their brother’s claim that they are nonbinary and clarified that they identify as transmasculine.
Per Healthline, transmasculine people are people who were assigned female at birth but identify more with a masculine identity.
A rep for Dylan has not responded to Page Six’s request for comment on Julz’s claims about their fractured relationship – though he did previously admit to being “extremely uneducated” on the topic of intersex communities.
“This was such an enlightening experience for me,” Dylan said in a 2024 interview with Adobe while reflecting on his experience with filming the movie.
He also said that his co-star River Gallo, who portrays a gender-nonconforming character in the film, is someone he holds “so dearly.”
“I’ll have [Gallo] with me for the rest of my life as a friend,” Dylan said.
While it’s unclear when exactly the siblings ceased being on speaking terms, Julz last posted an Instagram with Dylan in 2023.
A year prior, Julz wished Dylan a “Happy Birthday” on social media and told him, “I love you so much.”
