Ed Sheeran Says Many ‘Professional Singers’ Lip-Sync Their Performances but ‘Don’t Admit to It’

Ed Sheeran knows some of his peers’ secrets.

The “Sapphire” singer, 34, was tasked with correctly guessing which of six singers is a professional vocalist for a recent Beta Squad YouTube video and spilled some tea about his fellow pop stars in the music business.

One of the contestants told Sheeran she’s open to lip-syncing if her voice isn’t in its best shape, and the Grammy winner responded, “I don’t know if a professional singer would admit to miming.”

A Beta Squad member then asked, “I thought a lot of professional artists do that though?”

Sheeran replied, “They don’t admit to it though.”

The “Thinking Out Loud” artist was asked if he’s ever mimed a performance. He said he hasn’t and “can’t get away with it because it’s me with a loop pedal and a guitar.”

“But I would never cancel a show for my voice. I’d always push through, even if it was, like, slightly raspy,” added Sheeran.

He further explained, “I feel like if you are a professional singer, even if you do mime — because there are professional singers that mime, but they would never admit that they mime.”

Sheeran’s in the midst of his +−=÷× Tour, which launched in 2022. He’s currently on the European leg, with his next show set for Aug. 7 at Middenvijver Park in Antwerp, Belgium.

His upcoming eighth album, Play, is set for a Sept. 12 release. The project will feature the singles “Azizam,” “Old Phone,” “Sapphire” and “A Little More,” which drops Aug. 7.

The father of daughters Lyra, 4, and Jupiter, 3, whom he shares with wife Cherry Seaborn, recently revealed his kids’ favorite song of his during an interview on Kylie Kelce’s podcast Not Gonna Lie.

“Sapphire. And Sapphire from the beginning, like, they came to India when I made that record and they were in the studio whilst we were putting all the tablas and santoors,” he said. “They were watching all of that happen.”

“And I think because it’s just…I don’t know. They know most of the lyrics to that song now,” Sheeran added.
