‘Hacks’ star Robby Hoffman stormed out of Emmys after losing to co-star Julianne Nicholson
“Hacks” star Robby Hoffman revealed she stormed out of the 2025 Creative Arts Emmys after losing to co-star Julianne Nicholson.
“I was there with my sister and I was the biggest sore loser,” Hoffman recalled on Tuesday’s episode of the “Bald and the Beautiful” podcast hosted by “Drag Race” star Trixie Mattel, who was also at the award ceremony last September.
“I lose immediately,” Hoffman continued. “We’re the first award up. I immediately lost, and we woke up with all the gusto in the world.”
Hoffman, who played Randi in the HBO Max series, was up for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, but lost to Nicholson, 54, for her performance as Mary “Dance Mom” Alice.
The comedian said she assumed she’d win the Emmy, despite being up against “insane” talent like Olivia Colman and Zoë Kravitz.
“We’re beyond surprised to lose,” Hoffman admitted. “I walk in, I’m already like, ‘Where am I going to put the Emmy?’ We lose immediately, my sister goes, ‘We don’t need this s–t,’ and pushes me out. She grabs me by the arm. ‘We’re leaving this s–t.’”
Hoffman said when she ended up backstage, Mattel, 36, comforted her and let her “stew” about the outcome.
Despite her disappointment, Hoffman recognized that Nicholson was “beyond” deserving of getting the Emmy for her “amazing” performance.
While Hoffman initially fled the ceremony, she said she had to go back in the room because of a contractual obligation.
“I had to present cinematography. I said, ‘Nah, I don’t want to do that anymore.’ They said, ‘No, it’s part of the program!’” she explained.
“I was like, well, my circumstances changed. My circumstances have changed! I’m not in the mood, and they want me to read whatever’s on this teleprompter. I go, one thing I know, I’m not saying whatever the f–k they have me saying.”
However, Hoffman calmed down after she enjoyed champagne and took the stage to present the award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (Half-Hour) to “The Studio.”
Mattel, for her part, commended Hoffman for her “refreshing” behavior at the Emmys.
“You entered the room like your whole family was murdered,” the reality star stated. “You sat on the couch, and it felt like you were in shock that you were actually upset about not winning. You’d said to me, ‘I don’t think I cared and now I lost and I’m upset.’”
Hoffman said since getting the acting nomination seemed impossible, she thought she was a shoo-in to win the Emmy, which made the result “shocking.”
But Hoffman noted that already having won an Emmy Award for her writing work on the children’s show “Odd Squad” in 2019 made it easier to deal with the “Hacks” loss.
“We can’t say anything is rigged,” Hoffman said. “I like to defer blame for a long time before I go, ‘Rob, did someone do better than you?’ All fair.”
