Kristen Wiig was overcome with emotion when first meeting her Palm Royale costar Carol Burnett.

During an appearance on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, Wiig recalled her first time meeting the legendary performer, 92, while making the first season of the hit Apple TV+ series, which is set to debut its second installment on Nov. 12.

“[There’s] so many things I could say about Carol,” Wiig told host Amy Poehler of Burnett, who plays trickster Norma Dellacorte on the series. “When I met her, I just fully cried.”

“I was not expecting it… Except for when my kids were born and I saw them and I cried, I can’t remember a time when I just, I didn’t think I was gonna cry, and then it just, like, burst out of my eyes,” Wiig, who is mom to 5-year-old twins, Luna and Shiloh, with husband Avi Rothman. “I wasn’t expecting it.”

The Saturday Night Live alum recalled watching Burnett as a child. The actress starred on the The Carol Burnett Show for 11 seasons from 1967 to 1978 on CBS.

“I watched her as a kid, she’s just the greatest person,” Wiig shared. “[She’s] so important to us, and the fact that she just did it as a woman, during that time, and so many people said no.”

The Bridesmaid star previously told PEOPLE that Burnett has “become a very good friend of mine” after meeting on Palm Royale.

“We have dinner and talk and text and she’s so funny,” Wiig shared at the season 1 premiere of Palm Royale in March 2024. “I did press with her yesterday and she was cracking everybody up.”

“And I am a better person from knowing her. I just love her,” she added.

Wiig told Entertainment Tonight in March 2024 that she was overjoyed to work with Burnett.

“I literally said today, ‘I still can’t believe that we work together,'” she shared. “I wanna like verify that it’s her. I’m like, ‘It’s Carol, right? Yeah, I mean, it’s Carol.’”

“And for me, just with sketch comedy and everything she did for every person, every woman, she’s such an inspiration,” she added. “It was the crew, everyone. I mean, she’s just a dream.”

Burnett returned the compliment and praised Wiig, telling her costar, “Oh stop, When I heard who was going to be in this project, I didn’t even have to read it — I have to work with Kristen. I have to work with Allison [Janney]  and, well, I know and — I have to say, I’m thrilled. Maybe it’s a spoiler, but I have so many wonderful scenes with this one and I have been a fan of yours.”

“To be able to be in the same room and to film with her is just, it was…” she added, her voice trailing off in wonder.
