‘Love Island USA’ hunk Bryce was ‘bullied’ in school for being too attractive
“Love Island USA” Season 8 star Bryce Alakai Dettloff confessed he was bullied in school because he was “better looking” than his classmates.
During Sunday’s episode, Dettloff was asked by fellow contestant Trinity Tatum if he had “an ugly face growing up,” to which he responded, “No, I just looked like a girl.”
Dettloff told Tatum “it’s funny because all the girls liked” him, before recalling one time in middle school when “the hottest girl in school” came up to him in front of everyone and told him, “You’re the cutest guy ever.”
However, this came at a cost, with Dettloff admitting, “All the boys hated me and started bullying me for it.”
“All the guys used to bully me,” the 29-year-old reiterated. “Because they thought that I was better looking.”
Despite the reality show’s new season only airing for less than a week, several of its cast members have already made headlines.
Vasana Montgomery was booted from the series’ lineup just days before the show’s premiere after resurfaced videos depicted her using racial slurs.
The 26-year-old was filmed allegedly singing the N-word in a song lyric, according to TMZ.
When faced with criticism over her casting, a source close to production told Decider the video was not readily available to them during the vetting process and they were only made aware of the clip after she was cast.
The day after the new season premiered, Montgomery issued an apology for her past actions.
Sean Reifel, another Season 8 contestant, was slammed by J. William Reynolds, the mayor of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for resigning from the Bethlehem Police Department to appear on the show.
“Our police department spent a lot of time training and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” said Reynolds to local news outlets.
The mayor continued, “We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year.”
Police Chief Michelle Kott also criticized Reifel’s decision by saying, “At this time, I don’t think there’d be a department that would be willing to allow someone to leave for ‘x’ amount of weeks to go on a television show when everyone’s hurting right now and overtime is being utilized to fill those gaps.”
As of Sunday night’s episode, Reifel, 29, was the first islander eliminated from the villa after Tatum, 22, chose Dettloff as her match.
“Love Island USA” airs every day except Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Peacock.
