Sean Penn says taking selfies is a ‘soul-sucker,’ claims he wouldn’t even take one with a ‘Holocaust grandmother’

Sean Penn has stunned his fans with a wild claim about Holocaust survivors and the disabled.

The Hollywood actor said he decided to stop attending award shows, including this year’s Oscars, where he won Best Supporting Actor, after being bombarded by people asking for selfies at the Golden Globes just a few weeks prior.

“People should not do selfies ever with anyone. It’s bad for you; it’s bad for everyone. It’s a soul-sucker,” Penn told The Guardian. “It’s the Holocaust grandmother and her six-year-old paraplegic wheeling over? It’s a hard no.”

Fans rushed to social media to share their thoughts on Penn’s particularly strong wording, with many hitting out at the outspoken actor.

“I agree on the selfie thing though not to the extent Penn put on it. Holocaust grandmother seems a bit much but it does seem like a degrading exercise for the seeker,” remarked one.

A second commented, “Or, just be thankful you’ve got one of the most privileged jobs on the planet and spend two seconds being nice to the people that put you there … remember? The fans?”

Another insisted, “At first I thought it was ridiculous to put the Holocaust survivor thing in the headline until I saw that he brought it up unprompted!”

“I was kinda with him until that U-turn at the end there. I’m not even sure what that even means,” added a fourth. “Could you imagine if a conservative actor said that there’s no way he’s taking a selfie with a Holocaust grandmother?”

However, not everyone disagreed with the controversial star.

“Penn is a pretentious c**t for a dozen or more reasons, but I can’t say I disagree with his take on selfies,” shared one fan in agreement.

“Just because you are a Holocaust survivor, that doesn’t give you right to bother others,” tweeted another.

Penn won his third Oscar earlier this year for his role in One Battle After Another; however, he failed to show up to the ceremony.

The mystery surrounding his absence intensified when Kieran Culkin told the auditorium while accepting the award on Penn’s behalf: “Sean Penn couldn’t be here this evening — or didn’t want to — so I’ll be accepting the award on his behalf.”

Instead of schmoozing with Hollywood royalty, he was instead busy in Ukraine, spending time with good friend President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Sean, thanks to you, we know what a true friend of Ukraine is. You have stood with Ukraine since the first day of the full-scale war,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, along with a photo of himself and Sean sitting in his office.

“This is still true today,” Zelenskyy continued. “And we know that you will continue to stand with our country and our people.
