Sleep Divorce Benefits and Drawbacks: Here’s What Behavioral Scientists and Sleep Experts Actually Found
Nearly a third of U.S. adults have already slept apart from a partner to get better rest, and “sleep divorce” is fast becoming shorthand for a choice millions of couples are quietly weighing. Whether it protects your rest, your relationship or just your mornings depends on details researchers are still sorting out.
Fans of the arrangement swear it changed their life or saved their marriage. The evidence is more layered than that, and it depends on your partner, your sleep disorders and what you actually measure.
What a Sleep Divorce Actually Looks Like
A sleep divorce describes couples who share a home and a romantic relationship but not a bed. Some move to a separate bed in the same room. Others sleep in a different room entirely.
The setup is more common than you might expect. A survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that 31 percent of U.S. adults have tried either sleeping in another bed in the same bedroom or in another space in the home to accommodate a bed partner.
Noise is usually the trigger. According to the 2025 Global Sleep Survey by Resmed, 39 percent of respondents said their partner disrupts their sleep at least once a week, and 36 percent blamed snoring or loud breathing.
What the Research Says About Sleep Health
The strongest case for sleeping apart comes from people who have tried it. In an article for healthylife.com, Dr. Moira Junge, a Registered Health Psychologist, wrote, “By avoiding disruptions caused by a bed partner, about 53 percent of people who have tried a sleep divorce report that their sleep quality increased after sleeping alone. Plus, objective measures (like EEGs) confirm this.”
Sharing a bed carries its own measurable perks, though. Brandon Fuentes from the department of psychiatry at the University of Arizona, told Psychology Today, “Sleeping with a romantic partner or spouse shows to have great benefits on sleep health including reduced sleep apnea risk, sleep insomnia severity, and overall improvement in sleep quality.”
Why Sharing a Bed Can Still Be the Healthier Choice
Physical closeness at night affects the body, not just the mood. Wendy Troxel, a senior behavioral scientist at the RAND Corporation and author of “Sharing the Covers, Every Couple’s Guide to Better Sleep,” told TIME that body-to-body contact like snuggling in bed “can produce a feeling of calm and even have physiological effects, including lowering blood pressure and essentially lowering that ‘fight or flight’ or sympathetic nervous-system response.”
That helps explain why couples who sleep well together often describe a sense of calm, safety and happiness when their partner is next to them.
Is a Sleep Divorce Healthy for Your Relationship?
The honest answer is that it depends on the couple. If one partner’s sleep is constantly disrupted by the other’s snoring or restlessness, or if the two of you have opposite preferences around room temperature, bedding, mattress firmness or noise and light, some version of a sleep divorce is worth testing.
If you sleep well side by side and the closeness brings comfort, there is no reason to shake things up for the sake of following a trend. The sleeping setup that leaves both people in the partnership feeling their best is the right one.
