Soho House cutting ‘hundreds of members’

Not in my house!

Amidst cutthroat competition in the private club space, sources tell Page Six the spot that started it all, Soho House, is culling hundreds of members across its most popular spots in the US, including its Hollywood and NYC locations.

We hear that membership teams at Soho Houses in West Hollywood, New York and Miami Beach are axing members that “no longer mirror the club’s creative profile.”

Sources say that as Soho House heads back to being privately held in a $2.7 billion deal — including backers like Ashton Kutcher and ending a four-year run on the NYSE — it’s becoming, well, more private, and toughening up on the quality of its members.

If you’re a finance bro who’s nervously refreshing your Soho House app as you read this, it’s not just one kind of member getting their card yanked either. Word is, “there’s a real mix of members who are getting revoked, so it’s not about any one type of person, but more a general theme about the quality of the member,” said a source.

The London club first launched in the US with a real bang in 2003 with its Meatpacking District location at a time when “private clubs” in NYC meant musty, fusty old-fashioned spots like Doubles, the Union Club and the Harvard Club — evoking images of Easter buffets and Ivy Leaguers named Muffy and Chip playing squash in all-white outfits. The NYC version was moody, sleek, sophisticated and fun, while the West Hollywood outpost was such a hit that it has repeatedly held the Oscars’ best picture after-party, as well as star-studded bashes for top agency CAA.

But the once-bleeding-edge hotspots were made to look old-hat by competitors like San Vicente Bungalows and the Bird Streets Club in LA, and Chez Margaux, Casa Cipriani, San Vicente West Village, Aman and more in Manhattan. The Soho House members also put the places through their paces, making frequently used spaces look more Miss Havisham than can’t miss after decades of service. 

But like the faces of so many current Hollywood stars, Soho House West Hollywood has just completed a massive refresh — with a new reception area, sitting room and garden. Starting this month, member and award-winning chef Nancy Silverton will offer an exclusive dinner menu. On weekends there’s a new “Feast” complete with a trad English roast.

“Wicked” wiz Jeff Goldblum and his Midred Snitzer Orchestra are apparently playing this weekend in the Sitting Room, and there are chats with “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson and Eurythmics rocker Dave Stewart coming up.

At the Downtown LA outpost, the Persian restaurant Berenjak — from the London location — opened in the “Garden at Soho Warehouse” this week. Berenjak has previously successfully launched at Soho House’s coveted Soho Farmhouse in the UK (which just hosted Lady Gaga) and at its Dumbo spot in Brooklyn.

CEO Andrew Carnie, who took over in 2022, told members last year his focus is improving existing Houses, and slowing the expansion of new ones.

In February, Soho House New York redid its main club floors, and Soho Beach House, which opened in 2010, is also undergoing a refresh, due to be completed at the end of November, in time for Art Basel Miami Beach.

It’s not the first time the club has cut membership: In 2010 The Post reported that hundreds were tossed because of an overly corporate feel that didn’t match the creatives friendly, relaxed environment the club initially courted.

A Soho House rep declined to comment. An “Every House” membership is now around $5,800 — which doesn’t include the Malibu outpost — as well as a $1,000 reg fee which members get back in credits.
