U2 bassist Adam Clayton and his wife Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho called time on their marriage after ten years together and have requested privacy.

The news was confirmed by a representative for the couple who shared the confirmation with the Sunday World. The pair tied the knot back in 2013 and they share a six year old daughter named Alba. In a statement issued by the couple’s rep, it read: “After more than 10 years of marriage, musician Adam Clayton and lawyer Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho have amicably divorced.”

It continued: “Both will continue to be fully involved in the care of their daughter and they request that the family’s privacy be respected.” Adam, 64, and Mariana – who works as a lawyer – married in an intimate ceremony at a Dublin registry office four years after they started dating.

Despite the ceremony being low-key, they left no stone unturned as they celebrated their nuptials with a lavish and star-studded party with 150 guests, including his bandmates Bono, The Edge and Larry at a historic French chateau near Cannes. Four years after their wedding, they welcomed their daughter and announced the news via a personal advertisement in the Irish Times. It read: “Adam and Mariana Clayton are delighted to announce the birth of their beautiful baby girl Alba.”

Traditionally, Adam has always opted to keep his private life as that, private, but made a rare revelation about his wife at the MusiCares MAP Fund event in June 2017. Speaking about the moment he met Mariana, he gushed: “I was in Brazil and I met a lawyer who was smart and beautiful. We started dating. I got married in sobriety to Mariana. I didn’t think that would happen. She’s never seen me drinking, but she does know me crazy. Thank you, Mariana, for the wonderful life we have together and for making every day more meaningful.”

Adam is certainly no stranger to courting headlines with his high profile relationships as he dated supermodel Naomi Campbell in 1994, which led to an engagement. But their union failed to stand the test of time and the pair called it quits. After the end of their relationship he then met and popped the question to Suzie Smith in 2006. Adam became known for more than his musical talent when he appeared on Gardeners’ World where he gave viewers an insight into his Dublin garden – which he has been looking after for three decades.

The garden comes complete with a river, more than 4,000 trees and tranquil islands. And fans took to social media to comment on his impressive outdoor space. One viewer said: “Now I love Adam more. I want a holiday in his garden!” Another wrote: “I wish BBC Two had a like button. Exceptional #gardenersworld tonight. Adam Clayton’s garden and story a revelation.”
