Jacob Ryan Gustafson is still a winner.
During the Tuesday, Sept. 23 episode of The Voice, Gustafson, 35, auditioned with a cover of Morgan Wallen’s “Spin You Around” and received no chair turns. Still, he decided to make a bold move on stage.
“I just want to say thank you for this opportunity. Can I bring someone up?” Gustafson, who’s a firefighter, asked the coaches after they turned their chairs around.
“She is the reason why I’m here,” he added of his girlfriend Jennifer, who introduced herself to the coaches.
“This life is a beautiful life and I’m so blessed. Even right now if I could change anything — the only thing I’d change is your last name,” Gustafson said, pulling a ring box out of his shirt pocket before he got down on one knee.
“Will you marry me?” he asked Jennifer, as the crowd cheered him on.
Then, coaches Michael Bublé, Snoop Dogg. Reba McEntire and Niall Horan approached them on the stage and congratulated him.
“Okay, so you won The Voice?” coach Bublé, 50, said to Gustafson.
“That’s the winner right there brother” Snoop, 53, yelled.
Afterward, Gustafson and his fiancée walked off stage hand-in-hand as she wiped tears of joy from her face.
“Jacob shows you that there are no losers on The Voice,” the “Haven’t Met You Yet” singer said in a confessional after the fact. “What a beautiful moment. Yeah, nobody turned but the person that he wanted most said yes.”
“That was nuts!” Horan, 32, added as he got situated in his chair.
Before his blind audition, Jennifer said that she loves “his career path he’s gone down” as a firefighter but “the unknown if he’s going to come home safe every night” is the hardest part.
“Just being able to have something that his kids can look up to and be proud of but not that he has to put his life on the line every single day would probably be the most amazing part for us,” she said of his reason for auditioning.
Then, Gustafson said he started gigging a year ago — but it was Jennifer who gave him the confidence to put himself out there.
“It took me 20 years to get the confidence to do something like this,” he said. “I really want to show Jen that her belief in me has made me believe in myself.
