‘Wednesday’ Brings Christina Ricci Back in Season 2 Before Brutally Killing Her Character Off

Netflix’s Wednesday found a way to bring Christina Ricci back in season 2 — but not for long.
During the first part of season 2, which premiered on Thursday, August 6, Ricci’s character, Laurel Gates, was brought to Willow Hill as a prisoner after she was previously kept in a separate facility to keep her far away from Tyler (Hunter Doohan). But distance didn’t help diminish her emotional connection to the Hyde side of Tyler, so Laurel was brought in to help treat him.
The first reunion didn’t go as planned when Tyler transformed into the Hyde and nearly killed Laurel.
“He thought I had abandoned him but he would never kill me,” Laurel said. “If a Hyde murders their master, they seal their own doom.”
Laurel ultimately sealed her own fate when episode 4 ended with outcasts breaking out of Willow Hill. She used the opportunity to go help Tyler, who was still chained up in his cell — and not willing to forgive her.
“I could never abandon you,” she told Tyler, who replied, “Wish I could say the same. You are the reason I’ve been locked away in here. You’re not my mother. You’re my master. Or should I say you were?”
Tyler gave Laurel a five second start as he once again became the monstrous Hyde. He then chased her down and appeared to kill her — this time for good. Tyler (in Hyde form) then ran into Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and the next shot showed her being thrown out the window and her fate unknown.
Wednesday, which premiered in November 2022, is based on the character originally introduced in The Addams Family cartoons. The concept later was adapted into a TV series, several feature films and a live musical adaption. (It has since been rebooted in several different mediums.)
Ricci, 45, previously played Wednesday Addams in 1991’s The Addams Family and its subsequent sequel, Addams Family Values, before joining the Netflix series in a mystery role, exclusively telling Us Weekly in October 2022, “It was super fun. I was really excited to work with Tim again. Jenna is so amazing and so good in this part and was so great to work with. And so it was really lovely.”
After her character was seemingly killed off in the season 1 finale, Wednesday found a way to bring Ricci back. It remains to be seen if that will happen again as fans await the second part of season 2.
Wednesday fans luckily have even more to look forward to with the hit series already renewed for season 3. Showrunner Alfred Gough and Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria released a statement in July confirming that there is also a Wednesday spinoff in the works.
“It’s something we’re definitely noodling. There are other characters we can look at,” Gough teased before Bajaria added, “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”
Wednesday season 2 part 1 is currently streaming on Netflix while part 2 premieres on September 3.
