Prince Harry recreates Princess Diana’s historic minefield walk in Angola
Prince Harry honored his late mother, Princess Diana, by recreating his mother’s famous trek across a minefield in Central Africa.
On Wednesday, Harry was photographed in Angola walking through a minefield, which is partially cleared of landmines, just as his mother did 28 years ago.
In snaps, the Duke of Sussex wore a body armor over his brown shirt and slacks with a navy baseball cap.
In 1997, Diana, wearing a similar outfit, was photographed walking through a different minefield in the same country. The trek raised awareness of the devastating consequences of undetonated landmines.
“Children should never have to live in fear of playing outside or walking to school,” Harry said, according to the BBC, about the threat of mines to civilians, particularly children.
Harry was in the African country to support the work of the Halo Trust, the charity that Diana also worked with.
The Duke of Sussex visited Cuito Cuanavale, a community approximately 350 miles from the live minefield that Diana traipsed in Huambo.
It wasn’t the Prince’s first visit to Angola.
During a 2019 trip, he retraced his mother’s steps on the same field she walked on.
Harry has always been fiercely proud of his mother’s philanthropic legacy.
In 2022, he told People that he hoped that “everything” he does, “makes her proud.”
“In the 12 short years I was lucky enough to have with her, I saw and felt the energy and lift she got from helping others, no matter their background, ailment or status. Her life and theirs was better for it, however short theirs or hers was.”
He added, “I honor my mother in everything I do. I am my mother’s son.”
Last year, while presenting an award named after his mother, Harry congratulated the recipients, telling them, “that my mum would be incredibly proud of you guys. Your activism [and] your compassion are two things that are so true to how my mum lived her life and what she believed in.”
Earlier this year, it was reported that Harry wanted to change his last name to Spencer, his mother’s, following a rift with the royal family.
Princess Diana died in a car accident in August 1997, when Harry was only 12 years old.
