Tiffany Haddish Reflects on 3rd Year of Sobriety After DUI Arrest: ‘Life Is Awesome’

Tiffany Haddish is opening up about her ongoing sobriety journey.

“Hey, I stopped drinking altogether when I realized how much bad stuff I was seeing connected to alcohol,” Haddish, 46, wrote via X on Saturday, August 22. “Sitting in court really opened my eyes. Case after case — domestic violence, child abuse, theft, fighting, Grape — alcohol kept showing up somewhere in the story. And I thought, ‘Damn, what would happen if I just never drank again?’ So I stopped.”

Haddish was arrested in January 2022 in Georgia for driving under the influence, for which she pleaded earlier this month. As part of her plea agreement to avoid trial, Haddish’s driver’s license was suspended and she was sentenced to 12-month probation. The comedian was arrested on suspicion of DUI for a second time in November 2023, also reaching a plea deal after pleading no contest to reckless driving. Haddish was also sentenced to probation.

In the years since her arrests, Haddish vowed to quit drinking.

“Over three years later, LIFE IS AWESOME. No more waking up in pain. No more waking up next to ugly people. 😂 No more toxic relationships,” the Girls Trip actress added on Saturday. “Narcissists REALLY don’t like sober Tiffany because I don’t feed into the mess anymore. It’s actually funny how fast a sober mind will run a toxic soul right up out of your life.”

Haddish continued, “I really wonder what would happen if everybody stopped drinking for just six weeks. How many arguments wouldn’t happen? How many bad decisions wouldn’t get made? How many people wouldn’t end up in court? I can only speak for me, but giving up alcohol gave me clarity.”

According to Haddish, she “can see [her] dreams clearer than ever” after three years without drinking alcohol.

“Now I actually believe I’m going to make every damn one of them come true,” she concluded. “Any Questions?!?”

When Tiffany Haddish arrives to our interview, I greet her by saying, “Hi, Tiffany, how are you?” She replies, “Successful. How are you?” The answer is that I am not as successful as Haddish, 45, whose new Peacock docuseries, Tiffany Haddish Goes Off (November 13), is a Girls Trip–inspired delight that follows the comedian — […]

Haddish previously announced in May 2024 that she planned to stop drinking “any” alcohol.

“Never gonna do that again,” she stressed to Extra at the time. “It feels good to wake up and my elbows ain’t aching. My knees ain’t burning. The crooks of my ankles ain’t on fire, you know, there’s no inflammation. I want to be in a good place. I want to see me in a good place, too.”
